The popular open-source 3D software Blender has just been updated to version 3.1, and the update brings important improvements – especially for Mac users. Blender 3.1 now has Metal GPU rendering for Macs with the M1 chip and its variants. A beta version of Blender 3.1 with Metal support was released back in December 2021, and the update is now available to all users. Since Apple ended support for OpenCL technology in macOS in favor of Metal, Blender has never offered the option to enable GPU rendering on Macs....
What Chicago PD has managed to do during it’s run is nothing short of remarkable. For fans of Chicago Fire, this is one show we didn’t want to see. Primary iPhone assembler Foxconn has reportedly bought a stake in China’s top chipmaker, Tsinghjau Unigroup – but appears to have done so without the necessary government approval. The move comes at a time when Apple is seeking to widen its chip supplier roster to guard against supply chain disruptions … Bloomberg cites its own sources. The Taiwanese government views this as a “sensitive” deal, and requires companies to seek approval from the country’s investment watchdog....
The Apple TV+ movie CODA today picked up three awards at the Oscars, including the prestigious Best Picture top honors. Apple acquired the movie out of Sundance back in January 2021. In just its second year of eligibility, Apple has beat out the competition to become the first streaming service to win the Best Picture prize. CODA also won for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor (Troy Kotsur). CODA premiered at Sundance 2021 as a festival favorite, and Apple secured streaming rights in a record-setting $25m deal....
The Coen Brothers’ The Ballad of Buster Scruggs is now a western anthology film rather than a limited series, as originally intended. Netflix is planning to give the movie an awards season push by releasing it in select theaters (for Oscars qualification), before it debuts on the streaming service later this year. Written/directed by the Coens, Ballad of Buster Scruggs previously encompassed six segments originally conceived as individual TV episodes. Those segments include “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs”, starring Tim Blake Nelson as (Wanted) singing cowboy Buster Scruggs; “Near Algodones”, a story about a high-plains drifter who struggles to succeed as either a cattle driver or bank robber; “Meal Ticket”, which revolves around the members of a traveling show; “All Gold Canyon”, a tale about a prospector who finds gold, but must ward off an encroacher; “The Gal Who Got Rattled", a segment about two trail bosses and a woman who cross paths while traveling the Oregon Trail; and “The Mortal Remains", a story about five passengers on a stagecoach....

An official depressing study revealed that TikTok is the fastest-growing source of news for British adults. For teenagers, the top news source was Instagram, closely followed by TikTok then YouTube. The situation is even worse in the US, where a quarter of adults say they use TikTok to get their news. The Guardian reported on the study by Ofcom, the official watchdog for TV, Internet, and other communications services. While the 7% figure puts it well below mainstream TV channels, like the BBC, Sky, and ITV, it’s the rate of growth which paints a worrying picture....

Despite Pan being released the previous year, Disney has attached a director and a screenwriter to their upcoming live-action adaptation of Peter Pan. There are several reasons some comic-book romances or stories with adult hemes haven’t aged well. Things once taken for granted now look questionable. What once passed as “edgy” now looks creepy. Sometimes writers pushed the envelope to grab eyeballs in a crowded market. Situations that looked unremarkable in, say, 1980, are obviously problematic decades later. Sometimes creative people just have dumb, sexist, cringeworthy ideas.
