UPDATE: Read our Frozen 2 trailer breakdown.

The new trailer for Frozen II has arrived. Disney’s animated hit Frozen captured the zeitgeist in 2013, and the brand has since lived on with a short film (Frozen Fever), a mini-feature (Olaf’s Frozen Adventure), and a Broadway adaption. It’s also had a proper sequel in the works since 2015, with returning directors Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee plotting the next chapter in Anna, Elsa, and Kristoff’s story. The Mouse House released the Frozen II teaser trailer earlier this year, hinting at an epic and action-packed adventure for the heroes and their snowy pal Olaf (Josh Gad).

Written by Allison Schroeder (Hidden Figures), Frozen II will follow Anna (Kristen Bell), Elsa (Idina Menzel), and Kristoff (Jonathan Groff) on a journey well beyond the kingdom of Arendelle. The film’s teaser was pretty vague when it came to plot details, offering little in the way of concrete information and inspiring all manner of fan theories about what it may or may not have revealed. It did its job, though, and got people excited to learn more from the next major piece of marketing.

A full-length Frozen II trailer has now dropped online, following yesterday’s poster debut. You can check it out in the space below.

Much like the teaser, the Frozen II trailer does a nice job of hyping the film without revealing much of anything about its story. Both the trailer and newly-released synopsis indicate the sequel will explore the truth about Elsa’s powers and where they come from, even as she and the others set out on a “dangerous but remarkable journey” to protect Arendelle from outside forces. The footage also shows Elsa meeting with Grand Pabbie aka. the Troll King (Ciarán Hinds), who tells her she must go north across the “enchanted” lands and into the unknown to learn the truth about what’s happening. From there, the trailer teases Elsa, Anna, Kristoff, Sven, and Olaf encountering all sorts of dangers, including some kind of magical fire in the woods and what appears to be a giant (rock? Ice?) monster, as well as a mythical water spirit called Nokk.

Altogether, the Frozen II marketing continues to do a good job of keeping a lid on the movie’s secrets, while at the same time establishing its darker and more mature tone. It appears the intention here is for the Frozen franchise to grow and evolve as its core audience does, and that’s encouraging to see. Last year’s Disney animated sequel, Ralph Breaks the Internet, succeeded in taking that approach, and there’s reason to think it’ll work just as well for Frozen II. One wonders if the sequel will even take the leap and give Elsa a female love interest, as has been rumored and many fans have been calling for. After all, the Mouse House has yet to reveal who Evan Rachel Wood is voicing in the movie…
