The voice actresses behind some of Disney’s most famous princesses were asked at D23 this weekend about the possibility of their characters teaming up for a crossover movie, and all of them were in favor of it. Thanks to the enormous financial success of Marvel Studios’ dominant MCU franchise, interconnected cinematic universes and crossover team-up films are a growing trend in Hollywood.
When it comes to the world of animation though, few groups of characters are more well-known than the Disney princesses. While they’ve yet to share the big-screen, the Disney princess brand has long been a huge merchandise seller for the company, with characters like Jasmine, Belle, Pochahontas, Mulan, and Snow White long being darlings of Disney fans. Some of those characters aren’t technically princesses, but to Disney, the princess title translates closer to leading lady or heroine than anything royal.
With crossovers and team-ups being so popular in Hollywood right now, one wonders why the idea of doing an all Disney princess team-up movie hasn’t gained any traction. Especially since when a group of Disney princess voice actresses were asked about the prospect today by Fandango during the D23 expo, all were unanimously in favor of putting such a project together.
The actresses adding their voice of support to the idea of an Avengers-style Disney princess movie are Linda Larkin (Jasmine in Aladdin), Irene Bedard (Pocahontas), Kelly Macdonald (Merida in Brave), Auli’i Cravalho (Moana), Anika Noni Rose (Tiana in The Princess and the Frog), Jodi Benson (Ariel in The Little Mermaid), and Mandy Moore (Rapunzel in Tangled). Moore even jokingly suggests finding Disney/Pixar exec John Lasseter, presumably to pitch him on the idea in person.
As cool as the idea might sound though, one wonders if Disney would actually consider it, as so much of the company’s current focus is on doing live-action remakes of its animated classics, not bringing back the characters from those films for fresh animated adventures. Still, it’s hard to imagine that there wouldn’t be a legion of Disney fans interested in checking a princess team-up movie out, should it ever happen.
