Pixar hit the scene in 1995 with Toy Story and has since made a name for itself all on its own even though its movies were released under the Walt Disney Studios banner. In recent years, Pixar has taken to mixing original animated features in with its sequel slate, with its last four releases being an even mixture consisting of Finding Dory, The Good Dinosaur, Inside Out, and Monsters University. Now, after 2016 saw the release of the massively successful Finding Nemo sequel, Disney and Pixar are gearing up for another sequel in Cars 3 as well as the original movie Coco.
The film will follow a young boy named Miguel (Anthony Gonzalez) who dreams of following in the footsteps of his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz (Benjamin Bratt), and becoming a musician - despite his family’s ban on music. According to the synopsis for Coco, Miguel will travel to the Land of the Dead where he meets a trickster by the name of Hector (Gael García Bernal). Now, after the first trailer for Coco was rated, the film’s director reveals a new poster along with a timeframe for when the teaser will debut.
Coco director Lee Unkrich (Toy Story 3) released the new poster for the animated feature on Twitter and confirmed the first trailer will debut next week - likely before it’s attached to Disney’s live-action fairy tale adaptation Beauty and the Beast, which hits theaters next Friday. Take a look at the poster:
Although the new poster doesn’t feature Miguel, it does highlight the character’s dog, Dante - who is being petted by the arm of a skeleton, potentially Hector or another key character the boy meets in the Land of the Dead. The one sheet also includes Ernesto de la Cruz’s guitar, which Miguel plays on Día de Muertos (aka Day of the Dead) and inevitably lands him in the Land of the Dead along with his great-great relatives who banned music in their family in the first place. Additionally, the lace decorations at the top of the poster feature many of the main characters of Coco including Miguel, Ernesto, Hector, and Miguel’s Abuelita (Renée Victor).
Since Coco is Pixar’s next upcoming original movie, it’s one of the most anticipated animated films of the year - and is slated to debut in the coveted family friendly pre-Thanksgiving holiday period, while Cars 3 is set for a summer release. Since Disney and Pixar have only released a handful of images from the film, and now this new poster, fans don’t have much of an idea of what to expect. However, that will change once the first trailer for Coco debuts next week.
