Bethesda’s Dishonored took the gaming world by storm when it was released in 2012. Likened to the “thinking man’s games [from] the turn of the century which cherished player choice and control,” the game featured an incredibly realized steampunk dystopian world, with gameplay driven by supernatural powers. Even more compelling was the choice it gave players. While the game was primarily designed to be played as a stealthy assassin, players could take more challenging routes to fight threats head on, or spare every life in the game, instead “dishonoring” your targets.

At E3 2015, Bethesda revealed Dishonored 2 was in the works, which would allow players to choose between Corvo Attano, the hero from the first game, or the Empress Emily Kaldwin, who Corvo saved as a child, but now seems to bear supernatural assassin skills of her own. The trailer showed Emily on a mission in a new world, and indicated that this chapter would similarly feature consequences to a bloody campaign.

At Bethesda’s E3 press conference, we finally got our first look at gameplay from the highly anticipated sequel, complete with a fancy new trailer (see above), featuring the tagline “Take back what’s yours.” A number of new gameplay features were revealed, including the ability to hop back and forth between time periods at will via a new device that also acts as an inter-dimensional window. It was also revealed that Emily’s power set is completely distinct from Corvo’s, and that each character has a unique leveling scheme. The game is being produced with a new custom engine called VOID, which was produced to give the world a painterly quality. The game begins and ends in the original game’s setting of Dunwall, but the bulk of the adventure will take place on the all-new island of Karnaca, “The Jewel of the South.” Great measures are being taken by the artistic team to ensure Karnaca will have a deep sense of history.

Bethesda also shared a tweet, offering fans a chance to see Empress Emily’s all new look:

For fans of the series, there’s a lot to be excited about here. Karnaca looks gorgeous, and Emily’s vicious new skill set looks to add just one more wrinkle to the options that the original presented. The developers also seem to have doubled down on making sure that the game’s many possible play styles feel like legitimate options.
