Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 writer/director James Gunn has finally met Mark Hamill. It may still be a few years and (at least) four more MCU films before the next adventure for everyone’s favorite cosmic heroes hits theaters, but it already appears that Hamill could be among the new players that join the Marvel Studios sub-franchise in Vol 3… assuming his coffee date with Gunn went as well as Gunn says it did.
While Hamill is mainly known for his iconic role in Star Wars as Jedi Master Luke Skywalker, the actor has a long acting resume and has played a variety of characters over the years. He’s also known for his incredible voice acting roles, including comic book characters such as DC villain Sinestro and, of course, The Joker. However, it seems Hamill’s on-screen return as a comic book character is close to becoming reality, now that he’s properly met up with Gunn to (possibly) discuss a potential role for him in 2020’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Gunn and Hamill have finally met in person as they promised they would some months ago, as proven by the following Twitter post from Gunn. The tweet doesn’t explicitly say that the pair discussed a potential role for Hamill in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but their previous social media exchange indicated they eventually would when they met-up in person. Almost certainly, the subject was at least broached when Gunn finally paid a visit to the Hamill household.
It would be a missed opportunity not to cast Hamill in Guardians 3, or any MCU film in that case. Not only is he a brilliant performer, he’s also the perfect ambassador for the franchise. Considering how Marvel Studios tends to get celebrities who are willing to also represent the MCU both onscreen and in real life, the way that Hamill have relentlessly championed Star Wars over the years makes him the perfect fit for the gig.
Further, it also helps that Hamill has a broad acting range, which gives him a wide array of MCU character roles to choose from. Fan-favorite choices include him playing Pip the Troll, the Living Tribunal, and an Elder of the Universe (joining the ranks of Jeff Goldblum’s The Grandmaster and Benicio del Toro’s The Collector).
Nothing is confirmed at the moment, but it does seem like both Hamill and Gunn are game for the collaboration. If anything, Gunn, who’s in the middle of writing the story for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, can easily find a way to introduce Hamill and his potential Marvel alter-ego into the franchise. The next step, of course, is actually signing on the actor for the film.
