Representatives for Diane Lane are clarifying remarks the Martha Kent actress made Thursday comparing the DCEU’s Justice League to the MCU’s The Avengers. Lane, of course, has been a part of the DC movie family since 2013, when she and Kevin Costner were cast to play Clark Kent/Superman’s Earth parents in Man of Steel. The Oscar-nominated actress reprised her role in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016, and will be back again in November with Justice League.
Lane accidentally found herself on the wrong side of the long-standing Marvel vs DC fight Thursday when during the after show for Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, she was asked for spoilers for Justice League – and whether she thought the film was better than The Avengers. Lane replied, “No and no. [laughs] Short but honest. I hate to disappoint.”
In an apparent guess that Lane’s widely reported comments were misconstrued, Comic Book contacted Lane’s representatives for clarification. They said:
It’s unfortunate that Lane’s reps had to make a clarification on her comments, because it’s pretty easy to see how her words could be misinterpreted. However, with a movie as high profile as Justice League, the actress had no choice but to set the record straight. Besides, no actor in their right mind would intentionally firebomb their film that’s months away from release (although actors have been known to express regrets about projects years after the fact), and given how Lane was clearly trying to avert giving details about Justice League, her comments were clearly blown out of proportion.
“Diane meant ‘sorry to disappoint’ in reference to revealing anything concerning “Justice League” that is not already out in the public, and, was declining to comment on a film (Avengers) that she has not seen. She is thrilled to continue her role as Martha Kent, and appreciates your excitement for Justice League. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to clarify this.”
Lane, of course, has inadvertently found herself in the middle of a DCEU controversy before with the “Save Martha!” line from Batman v Superman, where Batman, ready to kill Superman, suddenly changes his mind when the Man of Steel asks his nemesis to “save Martha” (the twist being that Batman’s mother was also named Martha). Not afraid to avoid the subject, Lane defended the line in an interview last month, saying. “It’s the compassion for a man who’s lost his mother. When you understand the wound, you can work better with people.” Taking on that issue and the Justice League vs. The Avengers issue head-on, credit Lane and her reps for being stand-up people when it comes to addressing tough situations.
