The first logo and official title for Pokémon: Detective Pikachu have been released. Legendary is bringing the popular Nintendo franchise to the big screen in a brand new way next year. Although fans of the property have been able to see animated films in the past, Legendary is helping make the first live-action Pokémon film. Thanks to the necessary CGI elements, the movie will be a live-action/CGI hybrid with Pikachu leading the way.
Production on the movie began at the beginning of the year with stars Justice Smith and Kathryn Newton. The two young co-stars are surrounded by a great ensemble cast, but it is Ryan Reynolds being used for the voice of Pikachu that gave the film some true star power. With eight months still between fans and the film’s release, some details have finally been revealed.
As part of the Pokémon World Championships, Pokémon Company President Tsunekazu Ishihara was in attendance and made some announcements regarding Detective Pikachu. He started it off by confirming the full title is Pokémon: Detective Pikachu. Ishihara was then followed by director Rob Letterman, who revealed the first logo for the movie too. With Pokémon now starting to reveal some details on Detective Pikachu, fans will quickly begin wondering when more promotional materials will arrive. Since the movie doesn’t hit theaters until next May, it could still be a while before a proper first look comes. However, if Legendary and Warner Bros. give the movie even just a standard marketing rollout, a first trailer should arrive before the year is done. First look images usually are released before a trailer too, so those pictures should be the next item for fans to be on the lookout for.
Detective Pikachu will center around Smith’s character teaming up with Pikachu to solve a mystery. One of the other characters they’ll cross paths with is Detective Yoshida, played by Ken Watanabe. The rest of the film’s announced cast includes Bill Nighy, Rita Ora, and Suki Waterhouse. Details on most of these characters are still being kept under wraps as of right now. The supporting roles should, again, start to become more clear as the film’s release date approaches and the marketing kicks in. There’s so far no word on who the film’s villain is, but it could be one of these already announced names. Now that some official materials for Pokémon: Detective Pikachu have arrived, it hopefully won’t be too much longer before more is released.
