After over a decade, the Destroy All Humans! franchise is on its way back. THQ Nordic has been hard at work on bringing back properties that many may have thought to be shelved indefinitely. Most recently gamers have been treated to the return of Darksiders through a third core entry and the brand-new spin-off Darksiders Genesis. Even SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom is getting a remaster through the company’s aptly subtitled ‘Rehydrated’ edition. It was clear that the company wouldn’t stop there, though.
THQ Nordic is sitting on some whacky franchises, but the developer appears keen to flesh out as many of these properties as they can. There’s even a Saints Row movie in the works, and there’s hope that a game isn’t far behind. While gamers await that seemingly inevitable game, however, another return has been confirmed for one of the studio’s more overlooked selections.
Destroy All Humans! is finally on its way back to relevancy, thanks to the newly announced remake of the original game via IGN. The title will arrive for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in 2020, which makes it appear as if a Switch port is off the table for the time being. While an official release window for next year is missing, a teaser trailer for the Destroy All Humans! remake did drop, courtesy of THQ Nordic.
Those familiar with the series may recall that the original 2005 game starred an angry alien by the name of Crypto. The remake won’t waver on that portrayal, as the Destroy All Humans! remake looks to offer a very familiar experience with refined visuals for a new generation. The weapons and gadgets that made obliterating the helpless human populace of 1969 Earth look like they’re returning, which should help to recapture the primal thrill that accompanies such levels of violence. Admittedly, Mortal Kombat 11 does a good job of scratching that itch as well.
Despite being an Orwell-inspired monster that vaporizes innocent people, there is a loose backstory behind why Crypto has been tasked with destroying all humans. The ends don’t really justify the means, but it’s great to see older franchises making their return to the limelight. E3 2019 should bring with it the opportunity for more old IP to return, with the known example being Battletoads coming back. Here’s hoping others like Banjo-Kazooie return as well.
