One Destiny 2 fan has figured out the rate of fire for the new Tommy’s Matchbook weapon by timing it to the background music of the game’s latest Season of the Worthy trailer. This player went on to post his theory on Destiny 2’s Reddit page shortly after the trailer hit the internet yesterday, leading to much speculation and joking around among the game’s community.

Said trailer showcases Destiny 2’s tenth DLC expansion pack, or “season” as the game calls them, which promises a wealth of new content for Bungie and Activision’s free-to-play, online multiplayer sci-fi FPS. This includes a new story campaign that will run from March 10 to June 9 and features the villainous Cabal plotting to destroy the Earth’s Last City, forcing the heroic Guardians to make tough choices in order to stop them. It will also finally do away with loot boxes in Destiny 2 and add a number of new weapons to the game, including a Tommy Gun-like Exotic Rifle appropriately called the Tommy’s Matchbook.

According to Reddit user u/BingoFlex, the Tommy’s Matchbook could have a fire rate of roughly 900 RPM (rounds per minute), as shown at about the 1:30 mark of the Destiny 2: Season of the Worthy trailer. “The music […] is playing at around 112 bpm,” he explains on the r/DestinyTheGame subreddit. “You can hear Tommy’s Matchbook shooting at 8 Shots per Beat of the music. Calculating that out, it comes out to basically 900 RPM.”

Although Tommy’s Matchbook would be the first weapon in Destiny 2’s Automatic Rifle class to shoot at 900 RPM, the game’s arsenal of futuristic weaponry does already contain various submachine guns, such as the Riskrunner and the Recluse, which operate at that rate. However, most of these weapons were eventually nerfed in one form or another due to proving overpowered during PVP matches, with Recluse in particular no longer providing a damage bonus to body shots.

Bungie will likely give Tommy’s Matchbook a similar trade-off should BingoFlex’s theory prove correct, as they wouldn’t want such a rapid-firing weapon to give players too much of an edge during matches. Still, it’s impressive that someone was able to make such a detailed prediction from a few seconds of video alone, especially one that involves calculating everything from the beat of the background music to the rate of a gun firing. However, fans will have to wait until Destiny 2’s Season of the Worthy is released on March 10 to see if it proves accurate.
