[UPDATE: The second Despicable Me 3 trailer is here!]
-
Illumination Entertainment continue to go from strength to strength thanks largely to the creation of Minions. The small yellow creatures first appeared in Despicable Me, and are now insanely popular across the globe. The public’s love of all things Minion spawned a second Despicable Me film, followed by their own movie, Minions, which is Illuminations most successful film to date, having grossed over $1 billion at the worldwide box office.
Following on from more success with The Secret Life of Pets and Sing, Illumination are taking us back to the world of Gru and his Minions once more, with Despicable Me 3, set to release in June. The first Despicable Me 3 trailer highlights a new ‘villain’ in the form of Balthazar Bratt, with Gru trying to stop him from taking over the world. A second trailer is set to arrive tomorrow, March 14th, and the preview for said trailer hints that we’ll soon be meeting more of Gru’s family. Take a look, above.
As the brief clip above shows, Gru is still busy inventing, seemingly unaware that he has a twin brother, Dru, alive and well (and fabulously rich, it seems). So far, so good… only Gru’s excitement doesn’t look set to last. While he’s busy trying to face off against the villainous former child star, Bratt, Gru also has sibling rivalry to contend with, and knowing Gru’s luck, it won’t be pretty. We’ll know more when the full trailer arrives tomorrow.
Despicable Me 3 sees Despicable Me 1 & 2 director Pierre Coffin back at the helm, with Kyle Balda (Minions) and Despicable Me franchise character designer Eric Guillon as his co-directors. Steve Carell once again lends his voice to Gru, and also to Dru, while South Park co-creator Trey Parker voices Balthazar Bratt. Kristen Wiig also returns as the voice of Lucy; Gru’s former arch-nemesis now turned wife. Russell Brand also returns from Despicable Me 2 as Dr. Nefario, as does Steve Coogan as Silas.
The plot of Despicable Me 3 doesn’t really seem to differ much from the previous two installments; that is to say, this time around Gru is having problems bonding with Dru rather than his adopted children, but despite the lack of imaginative storyline, Despicable Me 3 still looks to be a whole lot of fun. Certainly, the characters of the movie will be enough to sell it as the summer blockbuster for families, and another excuse for Minions merchandise to invade every shop in the land. Love them or loathe them (how could you?), there’s no denying Illumination have created spectacularly infectious and appealing characters for young children to enjoy.
