Update: Here’s the E3 2018 Death Stranding trailer and our detailed breakdown!
It is one of the most hotly-anticipated and mysterious video games ever and Mads Mikkelsen is hyping up some unusual gameplay for in Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding.
Having been teased for what feels like an eternity, Kojima and Sony’s action horror project will be back for another E3 appearance next month, and eventually released as a PlayStation 4 exclusive. With an all-star cast of lifelike renditions for the actors including Mikkelsen and The Walking Dead’s Norman Reedus, what little gamers have seen of Death Stranding appears to be a stunning piece of cinematic gaming. As fans still patiently wait to see what the game’s gameplay will really be like, some interesting tidbits have emerged surrounding a wholly unique concept.
Mikkelsen is expected to play one of the title’s leads, and with almost nothing about the game seeming straightforward, the 52-year-old has weirdly explained to Total Film how Death Stranding is taking co-operative gaming to the next level:
If players weren’t already left bamboozled by the slow trickle of terrifying trailers that Kojima has leaked out, the idea of collaborative gameplay around the world is another head-scratcher for Death Stranding. Kojima has previously said that core ideals of the game would be “sticks and ropes” to connect players, which is what Mikkelsen seems to be alluding towards. Whether different time zones will factor into completing a mission or if this co-op element is just for multiplayer remains to be seen, but consider everyone stumped.
“The whole concept of playing the game, as I understand, needs collaboration from different people from different parts of the world. Which is also on another level of fantasticness.”
Mikkelsen is expected to take another villainous turn as the game’s de facto antagonist, but as with all of Death Stranding, nothing is set in stone so it seems pointless to try and guess what on Earth is going on in the game. The star did go on to promise that the storyboarding for the game is like nothing he has ever seen before, which comes after Kong director Jordan Vogt-Roberts said that Death Stranding’s cutscenes will “melt your eyeballs.” Here’s hoping that the title can live up to its own massive expectation. Kojiman’s last game, Metal Gear Solid V, featured a unique and hidden co-op element where all players on a server could disarm their nukes to trigger a special event.
2018 has been a revolutionary year in gaming thanks to the likes of God of War, while the rest of this year is shaping up nicely with ambitious titles like Insomniac’s Spider-Man and Red Dead Redemption 2. Some are expecting Death Stranding to hit shelves this year, but it looks like Kojima is intent on keeping players hanging on by a thread for just a little longer.
