There’s no denying that the modern political world is in a bit of disarray right now, no matter where you stand on the political spectrum. New Netflix original series Dear White People seems to be picking up on that, delivering a comedy series to fans later this year, following writer/director Justin Simien’s 2014 social satire movie of the same name.
Production for the series started last year, with a number of different cast members revealed through the past few months; including Marque Richardson, who’s reprising his role as Reggie from the original film. Exploring the notion of racial identity in America at a predominantly white Ivy League college, it’s inevitable that the show is going to push the buttons of some watching, but many would argue it’s a much-needed injection of light-hearted humor. Now a premiere date for the series has been revealed along with a new preview clip which you can check out above.
The video reveals that Dear White People will be hitting Netflix on April 28, in a clip that also provides a preview of what potential viewers should expect. In it, we see Logan Browning’s character Samantha White remind her radio listeners that at Halloween, it’s never alright for white people to don black face and impersonate a person of color. The preview also briefly hints at volatile and chaotic scenes, promising this won’t just be a fluffy comedy, but a show with serious undertones and a will to educate.
Whilst the title is certainly a polarizing one, Dear White People was a huge critical success upon its 2014 film release, becoming one of that year’s biggest hits at Sundance and now currently sitting with 91% on Rotten Tomatoes. If the cast and crew behind this new Lionsgate Television production can emulate even a little bit of the magic that made the original movie such a beloved one, this could become yet another huge Netflix series.
Of course, there’s always the chance that a show like this one could help to further any racial divides or tension that may be apparent. That will all depend on how dialogue and scenes are delivered by those involved. With that being said, surely we should all be able to sit back and laugh at ourselves as well as one another. Dear White People isn’t an attack on the white community, but rather a little poking of fun. We as a collective nation and society should now be more aware than ever before of how minorities have been and continue to be treated by those in positions of power.
Dear White People comes to Netflix on April 28.
