Fox is feeling the mutant mass hysteria in the best way possible this week. After setting all sorts of records and winning a lot of respect from fans and critics for its R-rated “risky” (but not really) take on Deadpool to start the year, the film has since broken digital HD records on home video and is continuing that success on disc as well.

With X-Men: Apocalypse on the way (opening today in the UK), X-Men: New Mutants, Gambit, and Wolverine 3 all beginning production this year and another X-Men team-up (’90s set!) being planned alongside Deadpool 2 and X-Force, the buzz is strong, bolstered even more by today’s news that Deadpool on Blu-ray is dominating the sales charts.

So, after setting a record by selling 1 million digital units in its first week, Deadpool easily nabbed the #1 spot on NPD VideoScan’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart and the overall disc sales chart. Here’s the best part: Deadpool alone outsold all other 19 films on the chart combined (they together only sold 34% as much as Deadpool). Of course, Deadpool is the new hotness in retail this week so it’s not a surprise given the reception to the film and its award-worthy marketing tactics, spearheaded by star and producer Ryan Reynolds.

The success of Deadpool is potentially a game-changer not just for Fox and their Marvel properties (of which they’re expanding onto television as well with a pair of live-action series co-produced with Marvel TV) but for the genre as a whole. With shared universes and geek-friendly properties dominating the box office and future plans of the industry’s largest production houses, there’s now more interest and motivation for studios to explore other characters who wouldn’t otherwise get a chance on the big screen a few years ago.

It also means rival studios ideally won’t be as gun-shy about faithfully adapting obscure or outlandish characters and playing with more adult material of an R-rated nature. So, here’s to Deadpool sequels, and future mutant character solo movies (Wolverine 3 is R-rated too!)!

X-Men: Apocalypse opens theaters on May 27, 2016, followed by Wolverine 3 on March 3, 2017, and unannounced X-Men films on October 6, 2017 (possibly Gambit), January 12, 2018 (possibly Deadpool 2), and July 13, 2018 (possibly The New Mutants).
