After years of hard work, perseverance and months of a seemingly non-stop marketing campaign that could only be described as phenomenal, Deadpool arrived in theaters a little less than a week ago (at the time of writing this). So far, the movie’s stellar box office run has surprised many by crushing records - and it should soon easily top its competitors for the second weekend in a row.
A Deadpool sequel is currently in the works, but some fans aren’t content with waiting that long for more of The Merc With A Mouth. As a result, a fan-made petition has been developed, asking that producers of iconic late night sketch show Saturday Night Live bring Deadpool himself (played by Ryan Reynolds, of course) onboard for a stint as host.
The petition (over at Change. org) has been created courtesy of Deadpool superfan Andrew Stege and insists that the possibilities of a Deadpool hosted SNL would be “unlimited”. Stege’s petition – which as of writing this, is less than 1,000 signatures away from its goal of 25,000 – admits that a live televised Deadpool appearance would require some toning down, but that such a broadcast has the potential to rekindle the interest of viewers who have long since abandoned the comedy show. In addition to Stege’s confidence in Deadpool’s fourth wall breaking sense of humour, he also envisions the famed anti-hero’s interpretive dance moves to whoever may be the show’s musical guest.
By our count, this is the second Deadpool fan petition to have stirred things up a bit – the first being a petition for a ‘kid-friendly’ cut of the original movie last month. The petition garnered hordes of signatures, but fan petitions traditionally have zero influence on major productions or their characters. It’s also worth noting that the movements of Deadpool’s face in the film are done courtesy of CG, so a live version of the character would likely seem more than a little odd – and not in a good way, either. Furthermore, SNL doesn’t have a history of bringing on guests who remain in character the entire time – a Ryan Reynolds hosted SNL with a Deadpool inspired sketch seems far more likely.
However, we’re currently living in a time when popular television is branching out and trying new things – The Simpsons’ announcement that Homer would be appearing live in an upcoming episode quickly springs to mind. SNL itself has a lengthy history of acclaim and controversy, having most recently been picketed by protesters as a result of the show’s decision to have presidential candidate Donald Trump host. Trump’s appearance was a boon for the show; so by that rationale, bringing Deadpool on board could provide just the right amount of attention and intrigue needed to help skyrocket SNL’s ratings once more.
Deadpool is now in theaters. X-Men: Apocalypse will hit theaters on May 27, 2016; Gambit sometime in 2017; Wolverine 3 on March 3, 2017; and an unannounced X-Men film on July 13, 2018. The New Mutants is also in development. We’ll let you know when Deadpool 2 gets an official release date.
