Jack Kesy’s mysterious villain role may no longer be appearing in Deadpool 2. Directed by John Wick co-director David Leitch, who took over from original Deadpool helmer Tim Miller, the sequel sees the return of Ryan Reynolds as the Merc with a Mouth as he continues his shenanigans. Story details are still scarce at the moment, but based on the Deadpool 2 trailers, Hunt for the Wilderpeople‘s Julian Dennison’s mystery mutant will play a key role in the narrative.
Despite what seems to be an ensemble cast, Deadpool 2 didn’t really have big announcements for most of their new actors (like Terry Crews’ playing Edlam) bar the expected ones such as Josh Brolin’s Cable and Zazie Beetz’s Domino. However, Jack Kesy was reportedly cast as the main villain. And given this, many presume that the Death Wish actor will play a pivotal part in the sequel despite his unannounced character name. Unfortunately, with just a little bit over a month left before showtime, it sounds like fans won’t be seeing him in the film at all.
Coming from The Tracking Board’s Jeff Sneider on Meet The Movie Press is a huge development for Deadpool 2. According to Sneider, rumor has it Kesy may no longer be part of the forthcoming sequel. No supplementary details were given as to why, Sneider doesn’t seem to have personal knowledge of the situation, so it’s important to take this with a grain of salt. Nonetheless, this may be an interesting decision that came late in the game for the flick, unless it’s long been decided upon.
UPDATE: Deadpool 2 co-screenwriter Rhett Reese has taken to Twitter to address this rumor, stating simply that it is “untrue”.
“Jack Kesy, who’s gonna be the villain in Deadpool 2… I heard he got cut from the movie. Breaking news. So check that one out, guys. But yeah, I don’t know if we’re gonna be seeing Jack Kesy in Deadpool 2. We’ll see. I haven’t seen the movie, I haven’t talked to anyone who have seen the movie, but I’ve heard, someone chimed in after that poll and they were like ‘I don’t know if he’s still in it.’”
Initially rumored to play Black Tom in Deadpool 2, Kesy was supposed to be the movie’s primary antagonist despite trailers leading fans to believe that the sequel will be a Deadpool vs. Cable showdown. Similar to their complex dynamics in the comic books, while Wade Wilson and Nathan Summer are occasional rivals, they tend to come together to champion the common good. Chances are that Fox will be adapting that relationship, especially with an X-Force film on the horizon, and the two’s first mutual enemy (at least in film canon) would’ve been Kesy’s unknown bad guy.
Deadpool 2 has been getting a lot of controversial news lately after it’s started to be scrutinized for its late reshoots. Despite the fact that additional principal photography is often planned for blockbuster movies, the term “reshoots” has developed a bad connotation over the last few years as people quickly associate it with a problematic production. Things got worse when additional rumors surfaced that the movie has been testing out poorly. While reports came out explaining what the additional work is all about (adding screentime for Cable and Domino) and an official announcement saying that the screenings are actually doing much better, fans can’t help but still be worried about the film.
