Following the theatrical release of director Tim Miller’s stunning box office success from earlier this year, Deadpool has gone on to become the highest grossing R-rated movie of all time, having earned well over $700 million globally thus far, marking it as a higher domestic earner than its competing Marvel associated bedfellows Iron Man and Guardians of the Galaxy. In the wake of its well neigh unprecedented success with general audiences thus far, Miller’s film is set to reach DVD/Blu-ray this May, coming replete with an Unrated cut and a bonus after credit sequence originally planned for the production’s initial release.
Ryan Reynolds proved himself in spades and with great aplomb as everyone’s favorite “Merc with a Mouth,” thus paving the way for the production of Deadpool 2, featuring another fan favorite X-Men character - namely Cable. The introduction of Cable to the X-Men film universe stands as a long awaited cinematic event that looks to be closer than ever to becoming a reality.
According to Heroic Hollywood, Reynolds has just finished renegotiating his contract with Deadpool distributor 20th Century Fox in order to up his individual salary for future franchise appearances, including his return to the role of Wade Wilson in Deadpool 2. With said business completed, the task of filming Deadpool 2 should now be able to get underway starting in Fall 2016, in order to make a 2018 theatrical release date; most likely, the January 2018 date that Fox currently has set aside for some as yet (officially-speaking) unidentified X-Men movie.
In carefully recapturing and distilling the cult-classic comic book anti-hero for the big screen with Deadpool, Miller and Reynolds have collaboratively created one of the biggest mainstream franchise success within the superhero film genre of the past decade, outside of Marvel Studios and Warner Bros/DC’s biggest hit movies. With any luck, Deadpool 2 should be getting underway very soon, and news of new casting hires should be shortcoming - most notably including the actors set to play Cable and (if the rumor mill is to be believed) Domino.
Until Deadpool 2 finally hit theaters, fans of Miller’s initial success can look forward to revisiting Deadpool from the comfort of their own home, and begin anticipating the final release of the movie in all of its Unrated glory. Reynolds may have steered comic book fans wrong in the past, but his second cinematic iteration as Wade Wilson is nothing short of absolute mastery over the superhero form on film - making his competition of final negotiations over contractual obligations for him to continue playing Wade Wilson a means for celebration.
X-Men: Apocalypse will open in U.S. theaters on May 27th, 2016, followed by Wolverine 3 on March 3rd, 2017 and unannounced X-Men films on October 6th, 2017 (possibly Gambit), January 12th, 2018 (possibly Deadpool 2), and July 13th, 2018. The New Mutants is also in development.
