David Leitch is hoping that he’ll get to continue working on his vision for the Deadpool franchise in the MCU. Boarding the Ryan Reynolds-led superhero franchise after the original film’s helmer, Tim Miller, exited the sequel due to creative differences, Leitch expanded the title character’s world with the addition of Cable (Josh Brolin) and Domino (Zazie Beetz). A third instalment has been expected for the film series, but with Disney’s acquisition of Fox’s TV and movie assets, everyone’s waiting to hear official word about what will happen to the Merc-with-a-Mouth - apparently, including the filmmaker.

Finalizing the historic deal early this year, the House of Mouse’s move to take over Fox has more to do with their upcoming own streaming service called Disney Plus. But arguably the most talked about aspect of it is the return of long-separated character rights of Fantastic Four, X-Men, and all their tie-in characters to Marvel Studios, including Deadpool. MCU architect Kevin Feige has remained mum about his plans for his newly-acquired IPs, but whatever the future holds for the mutants, particularly Wade Wilson, Leitch hopes to be a part of it.

Speaking with UPROXX in light of the nearing release of his latest project, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham, Leitch was asked about the status of the possible Deadpool 3. The filmmaker claims he’s not in the loop regarding specific plans the threequel, although “it’s not for my lack of trying,” adding he’s just waiting for a call from Marvel Studios to talk about their plans for the movie.  He also offers encouragement to those who are worried following the announcement of MCU’s Phase 4 wherein a Deadpool film is notably absent.

Unlike the X-Men main saga which will be rebooted and recasted before incorporating into the MCU, chances are that Marvel Studios will honor what’s been established by the former two Deadpool films considering this take’s massive appeal evidenced by its box office - particularly its first entry. Disney boss Bob Iger confirmed that they’re looking to create more films from the beloved franchise. What’s unknown currently is how the change in studio will affect the creative freedom that Reynolds and his team have over this franchise. And assuming that it’ll maintain its hard R-rating, it will be definitely tricky to absorb that to a primarily family-friendly MCU.

“I know Marvel announced their slate and I think people were like, “Deadpool’s not on it.” I would never say never. And I think, obviously, he’s such a beloved character and it’s such a compelling world people want to go back. And I think they will find a way to do it. But I’m just being patient and let everybody take a breath and see how it works for them in the new Marvel, Disney world. And, hopefully, I’ll get the call. And that would be cool.

I’m sure there are people who want it more than me, but it would be hard-pressed to find them. I love that world. I love working with Ryan. I love that character, Deadpool. So, fingers crossed we get to bring another installment to life.”

Leitch is right, however, just because Fiege didn’t lay out their plans for their newly-acquired characters during SDCC, that doesn’t mean that there’s no plans for them whatsoever. The Marvel Studios boss himself did say that they had Phase 5 planned out, but opted to holding back in announcing them. Considering that the Deadpool franchise’s main creative force is Reynolds, it’s possible that he’s the one having meetings with Feige and his team regarding where they want to take the character in the MCU. And as fans have seen in the transition between the first and second film, it’s the actor’s decision who will ultimately direct his superhero film.
