Netflix’s Dead to Me is renewed for season 2. Created by Liz Feldman (2 Broke Girls, One Big Happy), the critically acclaimed series premiered on Netflix last month. Its talented team of executive producers includes Jessica Elbaum (Booksmart, Hustlers), Will Ferrell (The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, Drunk History), Adam McKay (Succession, Daddy’s Home 2) and Christie Smith (Nathan for You, Tosh.0). Dubbed a ‘traumedy’, the show explores the themes of loss, grief and forgiveness in a darkly, weirdly funny way.
The series stars Christina Applegate (Bad Moms, A Bad Moms Christmas) and Linda Cardellini (Avengers: Endgame, Fonzo) as Jen and Judy, respectively - two women who meet at a grief support group after Jen’s husband is killed in a hit-and-run incident. Despite their differences - Jen being a ‘Type A’ personality and Judy being a free spirit - the two strike up a friendship, but Judy has a shocking secret that threatens to destroy their bond. Season 1 of the hit series featured plot twists aplenty and ended on a cliffhanger that left fans of the show with more questions than answers.
Luckily, fans of Dead to Me will get to see how that cliffhanger plays out after Netflix announced it had renewed the CBS Television produced show for a second season. Series stars Applegate and Cardellini will return for season 2 and creator Feldman is set to serve as showrunner and executive producer.
There are certainly a lot of things the Dead to Me season 2 can explore (season 1 spoilers incoming). In season 1, it was revealed that it was none other than Judy who was behind the wheel of the car that killed Jen’s husband and befriended her in a weird, guilt-ridden attempt to right that wrong. Things got more complicated when it turned out Judy’s sleazy, emotionally abusive ex Steve was also in the car that fateful night and showed up at Jen’s house only to end up shot dead. Muddying the waters of their already complicated friendship even further, Jen summoned Judy - who was in the process of attempting suicide in the same way Jen’s husband died - to her house after she seemingly shot Steve.
Of course, whether it was actually Jen that shot Steve isn’t known for sure just yet so that and the aftermath of his murder will most likely be explored in season 2. Then there’s the question of whether Judy will go to jail for Ted’s death or if it was indeed Judy that was responsible for Ted’s death in the first place. Perhaps the biggest question is whether Jen and Judy’s friendship will survive. Accidentally killing someone’s husband isn’t something that’s easily forgiven, though, now Jen has seemingly offed Steve, the two women are kind of in a tit for tat situation at the moment. Whatever happens in Dead of Me season 2, let’s hope it’s as wickedly funny as its first season.
