Titans is another step closer to becoming a reality, now that veteran film and TV director Brad Anderson has boarded the project to helm the pilot. After so many years stuck in development hell at TNT, it’s hard to believe Titans is finally being made thanks to DC’s new streaming service. While CW Seed has been turning out digital series shows set in the Arrowverse, this new unnamed venture will help bring Young Justice season 3 and Titans to life. When it does, a new opportunity for DC content will emerge.
Details on Titans have been slim so far, but the show looks like it’s about ready to start filming. Over the past few months we’ve slowly learned who the main characters will be and which actors are attached to the roles. Brenton Thwaites will lead the team and series as Dick Grayson - though whether he’ll be Robin or Nightwing it’s still unknown. Thwaits will be joined by Anna Diop as Starfire, Alan Ritchson and Minka Kelly as Hawk and Dove, and Teagan Croft as Raven. With most of the cast locked in, the series has also now landed its first director.
Heroic Hollywood is reporting that Anderson has signed on to direct the pilot of Titans. Anderson has spent over a decade working in TV on shows like The Wire, Treme, and The Man in the High Castle. He’s also helmed multiple episodes of Fringe, where he presumably worked alongside Titans producer and writer Akiva Goldsman. All told, he has a varied background in genre and prestige shows, so he should bring something interesting to Titans.
Before Anderson began working almost exclusively in television, he had a burgeoning career as a filmmaker. After making a splash with the cult horror hit Session 9 in 2001, he went on to direct the film The Machinist, perhaps best known for featuring an emaciated Christian Bale. Though he’s worked on a variety of things over the years, his experience working in sci-fi and horror should help him bring some added depth to characters like Raven and Starfire on Titans.
As we await more information on the plot of Titans, casting announcements have continued to roll in. Recently, Lindsey Gort was added to the show as Dick Grayson’s detective partner Amy Rohrbach. We know the show will skew relatively young, but it will be interesting how the day job of the former Boy Wonder factors into the story.
And the one big team member who has yet to be cast is Beast Boy. Some audition tapes arrived last month with a number of the hopefuls, but the hero is the only main character who has yet to be cast. With the show arriving next year, it shouldn’t be too much longer until the cast is finalized.
Titans arrives on DC’s digital streaming service sometime in 2018.
