DC Entertainment president Diane Nelson is taking a leave of absence. In the wake of multiple slumps for the entertainment giant, Warner Brothers and DC entertainment executives seem to want to be in top physical and mental condition to make sure that their comic empire is in good hands and prepare for the inevitable task of rethinking and reshaping the DCEU.

The studio is poised to make a number of positive changes on that front, preparing fans for excellence surrounding their favorite DC comics characters. With the studio taking its time with surefire hit Aquaman, DC’s entertainment division has faced a number of other shake-ups in the wake of Justice League, but the comic franchise has bounced back better than ever. From Walter Hamada’s placement as head of DC Films to hiring Ava Duvernay to direct an adaptation of New Gods, the future has never looked brighter, which is why it’s important for everyone to be ready for a bright and busy future ahead.

According to THR, that could be part of the reason DC Entertainment president Diane Nelson is taking a leave of absence, to physically recuperate in the wake of multiple personal situations. The move was shared by Warner Brothers CEO Kevin Tsujihara in a memo to DC and Consumer product employees. Saying that Nelson has decided to set “new priorities for herself and her family.” Citing physical distress and a need for recovery, the move has the full blessing of Tsujihara. Nelson is scheduled to depart April 2nd, and while no return date has been set, she is expected to return.

In the interim, Chief Digital Officer and Executive Vice President in charge of Strategy and Business Development Thomas Gewecke will step in to support DC’s executive management team. DC Entertainment’s Dan DiDio, Jim Lee, Geoff Johns, and Amit Desai will continue to run the company’s day to day operations with Gewecke’s support. Gewecke will not be stepping into Nelson’s role but rather act in a capacity to provide assistance if the team needs it from Warner Brothers.

With the studio gearing up for major film releases like Aquaman and Shazam!, the move could be seen as a sign of trouble within the executive suite. Citing “personal reasons” for the leave of absence is not a positive sign. Studio shake-ups and underperforming box office are enough to make anyone feel uncomfortable with their current situation.

In the wake of positive hype for Aquaman, news about Shazam! and the incredible choice of choosing Ava Duvernay for New Gods, however, any changes in the executive suite are most likely a sign of DC Entertainment preparing for a very bright future. The blessing from Warner Brothers also indicates that this is not a sign of trouble, but healing and preparation for a bright future for the studio and brand.
