Beloved Scottish actor David Tennant launches a new podcast, with Doctor Who star Jodie Whittaker and Jessica Jones star Krysten Ritter set to guest. Nowadays, it seems like just about every celebrity can have a podcast, assuming they want to dedicate the time necessary to host it. For example, late night stalwart Conan O’Brien recently debuted his podcast Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend, while comedic actor Will Ferrell announced that he’ll be resurrecting Anchorman’s Ron Burgundy for The Ron Burgundy Podcast. When even fictional characters have their own podcasts, it’s clear how popular the medium is right now.
While a large amount of celebrity-hosted podcasts tend to be fronted by comedians - which makes perfect sense, considering the format - not all are. For example, there are many pro wrestling podcasts hosted by former WWE stars like “Stone Cold” Steve Austin and Chris Jericho. Geek-friendly film director Kevin Smith has also met great success hosting podcasts, and even rapper/reality star Snoop Dogg has managed to delight the ears of listeners.
Now, actor David Tennant has officially launched his own podcast, entitled David Tennant Does a Podcast With…, and its debut episode drops on Tuesday, January 29. The news was revealed on Twitter by Georgia Tennant, David’s wife, and an actress in her own right. Among the initial line-up of announced guests are two picks that promise very interesting conversations. The first is Jodie Whittaker, who currently stars on Doctor Who, the sci-fi series on which Tennant first gained worldwide fame. The second is Krysten Ritter, who played Jessica Jones opposite Tennant’s terrifying villain Kilgrave in arguably the most acclaimed season of Marvel TV to ever hit Netflix.
Tennant’s guest on the debut episode of his new podcast will be Olivia Colman, who recently earned an Oscar nomination for her work in The Favourite. A teaser for the podcast can now be listened to on its ITunes page, linked in the tweet above. Other announced guests so far include Hollywood icon Ian McKellen, Whoopi Goldberg, Jon Hamm, TBS late night host Samantha Bee, prolific British actor Michael Sheen, and former U.K. prime minister Gordon Brown.
It’s too early to tell whether David Tennant Does a Podcast With… will take off with the masses, or whether it’ll prove to be a failed experiment. While Tennant might not seem like an obvious pick to host an interview show, anyone who’s seen him be a talk show guest is well aware how charming and quick-witted the man can be. One hopes that will translate over to the role of host. If not, well, he’ll still have a thriving acting career to fall back on.
