Dave Bautista confirms he’ll return as Drax in Avengers 4 and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The Marvel Cinematic Universe received a massive shakeup at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, when Thanos’ wiped out half the universe’s population with the snap of his mighty fingers. Even though a few lucky heroes survived, the fallout of this simple act saw several major and fan-favorite characters vanish into thin air.

While used in the movie to show the stakes of the Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy failing to stop Thanos, it lost some of its impact for some viewers thanks to Marvel’s long-term plans. Actors like Tom Holland (Spider-Man), Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther), and Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange) have confirmed or likely sequels in Phase 4 and beyond. Even though Bautista isn’t a leading man, Drax was among the casualties, but won’t stay that way it appears.

Collider spoke to Bautista as part of the promotional tour for his new movie Hotel Artemis, and they asked him about his MCU future. After the way Infinity War ended, Bautista says his phone was blowing up. Instead of letting everyone worry for a full year about Drax’s future, he is reassuring everyone that Drax will be back - he just doesn’t know exactly how.

Bautista confirming he’ll return for at least two more MCU movies isn’t just good news for him, but for several Marvel actors. It was theorized almost immediately that those who vanished in Infinity War aren’t actually going to stay dead. The move instead puts the focus back on the original Avengers (plus Nebula, Rocket, and a few others). Marvel Studios has decades of stories left to tell, so killing off franchise leads who only have a single film under their belt wouldn’t just be shocking, it would be a terrible decision.

I got a lot of texts saying, ‘I can’t believe you’re dead, your character is dead.’ They were really like heartbroken and I was like ‘I’m gonna be in four. I’m gonna be in Guardians 3.’ I don’t know how they’re bringing me back, yeah but somehow I’m going to make it because, as far as I know, I am going to be in Guardians 3, so I have to be back.

While everyone now expects that Drax and his other vanishing heroes will return, the question now becomes how. There’s about a full year (and two more MCU movies) to go before Avengers 4 hits theaters and answers that question. Maybe Drax was actually just standing so perfectly still his invisibility activated. In the meantime, the production of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 could shed some light on the situation, as it’s planned to start filming before Avengers 4 comes out. Whatever the case may be, Drax appears to definitely have a future in the MCU, through 2020 at least.
