Darren Aronofsky’s thriller mother! (starring Jennifer Lawrence) is now hitting theaters sooner than expected - a month sooner in fact. Paramount Pictures has confirmed that mother! will be hitting theaters on September 15th this year, rather than its previously-scheduled October 13th launch date.
This means mother! will be going up against the likes of Marc Forster’s All I See Is You (starring Blake Lively and Jason Clarke), Michael Cuesta’s American Assassin (starring Dylan O’Brien and Michael Keaton), Albert Hughes’ Alpha (starring Kodi Smith-McPhee), and, Kate and Luara Mulleavy’s Woodshock (starring Kirsten Dunst) at the box office, during its opening weekend.
The studio hasn’t provided much in the way of details yet, regarding mother!’s change in release date. However, according to Variety, the studio may well be planning to premiere the film at one of three major festivals that will take place just before its September theatrical release. Those include the Venice Film Festival (which begins August 30th), Telluride Film Festival (September 2nd) and Toronto Film Festival ( September 7th).
It’s certainly good news for people intrigued with the Aronofsky film, the poster for which was shared earlier this year and saw a colourfully-illustrated Lawrence holding her own bloody heart out as an offering, with a gaping hole in her chest. Mother! is said to feature Lawrence and Javier Bardem playing a couple whose relationship is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their home, disrupting their tranquil existence. The film costars Michelle Pfeiffer, Kristin Wiig, Domnhall Gleeson, and Ed Harris, and is directed and produced by Darren Aronofsky through his Protozoa Pictures banner.
This is the first movie that Lawrence will be seen in, following her critically-disappointing year in 2016. Last year, Lawrence appeared in X-Men: Apocalypse and Passengers (opposite Chris Pratt), both of which received weak reviews and ended up with scores of 48% and 31%, respectively, on Rotten Tomatoes. Mother! will also be the only film featuring Lawrence in a significant capacity this year, though the Oscar-winner already has two movies lined up for 2018, in the forms of Red Sparrow and X-Men: Dark Phoenix. Lawrence will return as Raven/Mystique for the fourth time in Dark Phoenix, while Red Sparrow sees her play Dominika Egorova - a Russian spy who, after falling for a CIA agent, considers becoming a double agent.
Mother! is also the first film Aronofsky has directed since 2014’s Noah, which received rather mixed-to-positive reviews. No doubt, Lawrence and the director - who began dating after working on the film - are hoping for a good reception for mother! - and judging by the stellar cast involved, it certainly looks like it might achieve that. Both Darren and Jennifer have proved their worth on numerous occasions, and have the Oscar-shaped receipts too, so this new thriller may well be the cinematic offering that film buffs are hoping it will be.
