Dark Phoenix gets another promotional image of Sophie Turner’s Jean Grey. Marking the directorial debut of long-time X-Men film producer Simon Kinberg, the fourth film of the franchise’s prequel film series will reunite fans with  James McAvoy’s Professor X, Michael Fassbender’s Magneto, Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique and Nicholas Hoult’s Beast, alongside the brand new crop of mutants such as Tye Sheridan’s Cyclops, Alexandra Shipp’s Storm, Evan Peters’ Quicksilver, and Jean.

Fulfilling the promise of Jean eventually assuming the persona of the Dark Phoenix at the end of X-Men: Apocalypse, the forthcoming film is based on Chris Claremont’s The Dark Phoenix saga, and is Fox’s second attempt at adapting the print event following the critically-panned X-Men: The Last Stand. Production for Dark Phoenix has been marred with controversy, following several release date push backs. Response to the film’s first trailer was lukewarm, but the buzz from the film’s NYCC preview (a version of which was eventually released online) was noticeably more positive. Now, marketing efforts continue with the unveiling of a new promo still for the movie.

The official Twitter account for X-Men Movies released a brand new look at Jean Grey. It’s hard to gauge what exactly is happening in the image, but it’s worth noting that in most of the footage to be released for Dark Phoenix so far, Jean has been wearing this ensemble. She’s sporting the same look when she encountered Magneto (only with the additional overcoat), as well as during an encounter between her and her fellow X-Men led by Professor X. With a release date set for June of next year after being pushed back again from a February debut, Dark Phoenix is poised to be the first Fox film to be rolled out officially under Disney. The House of Mouse’s acquisition of Fox’s TV and movie assets that was announced last December has been progressing smoothly the last few weeks, and has recently taken a huge step forward by securing a seal of approval from China’s regulators. Originally likely to be formalized by summer, now, many predict that all legal proceedings will be finished as early as January. And as it turns out, Bob Iger and his team plan to push through with all completed and in-production Fox movies after the buyout is finalized. Aside from Dark Phoenix, another mutant-centric movie, New Mutants, which is scheduled to roll out next August, is also expected to have the same treatment.

Once Disney’s acquisition of Fox’s assets is finalized, the rights to the X-Men, Fantastic Four and all their tie-in characters will return to Marvel, and will be managed by Kevin Feige over at Marvel Studios. The MCU mastermind remains mum about his plans regarding the rich roster of characters that is about to join the famed franchise. While Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool will most likely be carried over, the X-Men series is expected to be rebooted in order to properly give the mutants an introduction that better fits the established MCU lore. Should this be the case, Dark Phoenix could be the final X-Men saga movie as fans know it.
