Check out this amazing comics-inspired poster for the forthcoming X-Men movie, Dark Phoenix. Featuring the second generation X-Men cast that was introduced in 2011’s First Class, Dark Phoenix puts Sophie Turner’s Jean Grey front and center, adapting the classic comic book arc of the same name in which Jean is taken over by a powerful psychic force. The movie features returning faces such as James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender and Alexandra Shipp, and will also include a new villainous character portrayed by Jessica Chastain.
While the X-Men movie universe has had great recent success with Logan and the Deadpool franchise, its primary X-Men series has been struggling critically and commercially, with both Days of Future Past and Apocalypse experiencing mixed fortunes. Add this to fans’ disappointment at how The Last Stand handled the Phoenix material and there is certainly an awful lot riding on the release of Dark Phoenix. Producer Simon Kinberg recently spoke out to reassure fans after the film’s release was pushed back on several occasions.
X-Men fans will have to wait until June 2019 for Dark Phoenix but until then, a new CCXP-exclusive poster has been unveiled (via X-MenMovies). The piece is styled to look exactly like the traditional X-Men comics and features faithful versions of McAvoy’s Professor X, Turner’s Jean Grey and Fassbender’s Magneto, along with the Dark Phoenix logo.
The poster brings together the classic history of the X-Men characters with the current crop of actors playing them and is sure to get both movie-only fans and diehard followers excited for the release of Dark Phoenix. A large part of the criticism directed at The Last Stand was due to Jean Grey’s Phoenix arc straying too far from the source material and audiences have been promised a more faithful interpretation this time around. Perhaps this new poster is part of Fox’s marketing strategy to ensure that fans know to expect a story closer to the one they’d have read in the comic books.
Of course, the excitement around Dark Phoenix is perhaps somewhat dampened by Disney’s impending acquisition of 20th Century Fox. The prospect of the X-Men returning to the Marvel Studios banner has many MCU fans hyped up and there is already plenty of speculation as to which new actors could be cast and how exactly the mutants might be be introduced into the Marvel franchise. This somewhat detracts from the buzz surrounding Dark Phoenix, a movie that could potentially be the final main installment of a series that began back in 2000 with the original X-Men movie.
