Going into the premiere of Marvel’s Daredevil on Netflix, many superhero fans wondered whether The Man Without Fear would finally get a proper screen adaptation. After all, 2003’s theatrical Daredevil movie starring Ben Affleck in the titular role was seen as a highly divisive effort at best and a downright clunker at worst. It’s telling that it took over a decade for the character to be resurrected on-screen, but thankfully, Marvel did indeed fix the mistakes made previously. In fact, Daredevil season 1 has been hailed as perhaps the best new series of 2015, and a game changer for comic book TV shows across the board.
Of course, when a show does that well, the natural follow-up question is “When do we get more of this?” While a second season of Daredevil has been officially confirmed for quite some time now, Netflix hasn’t yet seen fit to announce a premiere date for the Hell’s Kitchen-set drama’s return. Daredevil season 1 debuted in April of 2015, so many logically assumed that season 2 would premiere in April of 2016. Well, in news likely to delight more than a few Matt Murdock devotees, it looks like Daredevil season 2 may instead be coming a month earlier than that.
In the 2016 preview issue of EW, the magazine lists Daredevil season 2 as premiering on Netflix in March. While that’s only one source – and an unofficial one at that – EW isn’t some fly-by-night gossip rag, they’re a trusted industry news source. It’s hard to believe that they would print that Daredevil was returning in March without obtaining some type of confirmation from a person privy to Netflix’s plans for the series.
While one month isn’t that gigantic of a leap backward in the grand scheme, it’s still a nice treat for Marvel fans as the world prepares to transition into 2016. Superhero lovers have a ton to look forward to next year, from big-screen juggernauts like Captain America: Civil War and Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, to exciting new film properties like Doctor Strange and Suicide Squad, all the way to the solo Netflix debut of Luke Cage. The return of Daredevil amounts to the delicious icing on a tasty comic book-based cake – especially when you consider Daredevil isn’t coming back alone. Wilson Fisk may be behind bars, but Matt may long for his old nemesis after tangling with The Punisher. One thing’s for sure, Hell’s Kitchen better brace itself for the carnage to come.
Daredevil season 1 and Jessica Jones season 1 are now available on Netflix. Luke Cage season 1 and Daredevil season 2 will debut on Netflix in 2016. Release dates for Iron Fist and The Defenders on Netflix have not yet been announced.
