When Daredevil debuted on Netflix, it showed fans a darker and more violent corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe than what’s been featured in the movies and on network TV. Winning instant acclaim, the show featured a more grounded take on the superhero genre than many of Marvel’s other offerings and a deeper story than many expected.
With season 2 a mere two months away, more and more information is being released on what to expect. Much of the focus so far has been on the arrival of the Punisher, but now we’re starting to get a few details on Elektra as well.
Speaking at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour, Daredevil star Charlie Cox discussed the direction that the new season was taking Matt Murdock/Daredevil. He explains that “with Wilson Fisk in jail, the crime rate has plummeted. Things have returned to normal, if not better than normal.” This feeling of “normal” isn’t going to last, of course, as the Punisher arrives and begins his war against the remaining criminal element.
The Punisher’s war on crime is difficult for Murdock to stomach, especially as comparisons begin between the Punisher’s style of vigilante justice and Daredevil’s. Cox explains that this makes Murdock “question everything,” explaining that “Matt has to reevaluate who is and what he does.” This likely plays in to some of the moral themes that have been discussed previously for season 2, and looks at exactly where the line is between justice and vengeance.
Actress Elodie Yung, who plays Elektra in season 2, also discussed her character and how she approached her portrayal of the famed assassin. Referring to the way the character is portrayed in the comics, she said that “I wanted to keep the coldness” of the character. Yung continues:
“Elektra is kind of a sociopath. This world is a game for her, a chess game. What motivates her is what she wants. She’ll use anything [she] needs to use to get to her goal. If she needs to kill people, she will.”
Yung also explained that she and the producers wanted Elektra to be a complex character with different levels that come through in the season. “She’s not a bad person,” she explained, adding also, “She’s not a good person. She’s a person with different traits and layers. We’ll find out who she is really by the end…”
Showrunner Doug Petrie (who along with Marco Ramirez took over the role from Stephen S. DeKnight) also added a little information about Elektra’s costume in the series. The design of the costume was apparently driven by two questions: “What looks cool?” and “What would you really fight in?” Petrie explained that “Elektra isn’t just about protection. She’s a bit of a stylist,” and her costume in the series needed to reflect that. No word yet on when fans will actually get to see that costume, however.

Marvel’s Daredevil season 2 is set to premiere on March 18 on Netflix. Luke Cage is expected to debut later this year as well, and Iron Fist, The Defenders and a second season of Jessica Jones will come in 2017 or later. A Punisher spinoff series is also rumored to be in development.
