Marvel Netflix series Daredevil is revving up for its highly anticipated season 2. The season’s plethora of new characters are generating plenty of fan buzz, including The Punisher (Jon Bernthal), Elektra (Elodie Yung) and the evil ninja clan, The Hand. We will also get the return of several established characters, including Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) and Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson).
The relationship that Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), alias of the hero Daredevil, has with his law partner Foggy is most definitely going to hit some hard times. Daredevil season 1 saw Foggy finally get clued-in to his partner’s late night hobby of haunting the streets of Hell’s Kitchen. The second season will put that friendship, and Foggy’s patience, to the test.
In an interview with TV Guide, Daredevil season 2 showrunner Doug Petrie offered insight into what we can expect between Matt and Foggy this season:
Petrie’s Daredevil season 2 co-showrunner, Marco Ramirez had more to add about the Matt/Foggy friendship in the episodes that lie ahead:
“Foggy loves Matt. He’s very protective of him, but he’s scared of him, and he’s got to protect himself ultimately… It’s like having a friend who’s in the program. Like, “I’ll be with you, but there’s a point when your behavior is un-endorsable. And for the good of both our mental healths, I’m getting out of here.'”
We won’t be seeing Foggy working the streets in costume, obviously. The strife in Matt’s personal life is a great way for the showrunners to give him trouble on both sides of the fence. If a hero is only pulled one direction, its hard to give them enough depth to keep an audience relating to them. The complex balance that Matt has to strike between dealing with Foggy and Karen and fighting crime - not to mention the appearance of Frank Castle, aka The Punisher, is bound to cause some issues.
“Watching the buddy comedy version of the Matt and Foggy Show might feel lovely, but it’s not something in the writers’ room that we ever really wanted. What we love about those two characters is … how much they love each other, and constantly testing that friendship at every turn, and constantly getting them to a place where it almost feels like is this going to be it for these - for lack of a better term - brothers.”
Foggy drama is plenty for Matt Murdock to deal with, but Daredevil has a whole set of problems all his own. That includes the ninja clan, The Hand, that will be appearing to overload the Man Without Fear; the inevitable inclusion of Daredevil’s crusty old mentor Stick (Scott Glenn) and possibly his group, The Chaste and of course, Matt’s old flame Elektra Natchios will be immersing herself into the lives of both Matt and Daredevil again. To top it all off, Daredevil season 2 set photos has suggested that Matt will be facing even more enemies than trailers for Daredevil season 2 have suggested.
Daredevil season 1 was met with a huge fan response and early reviews of season 2 have heaped their fair share of praise on the episodes that await us too - meaning, they have some pretty big shoes to fill. It won’t be long now before fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will get to watch Matt Murdock back fighting crime on the streets of Hell’s Kitchen, though.
Daredevil season 1 and Jessica Jones season 1 are now available on Netflix. Daredevil season 2 will debut on Netflix on March 18th, 2016, followed by Luke Cage season 1 later in 2016. Release dates for Jessica Jones season 2, Iron Fist, and The Defenders on Netflix have not yet been announced.
