The first season of Netflix’s Daredevil was known for a few things, its dark, gritty tone and ambitious fight scenes among them. For better or for worse, it was also known for being a bit of a tease when it came to its titular hero’s costume, keeping him in a cobbled-together black outfit until his signature red one was debuted at the end of the season.
Season 1 was very much an origin story, introducing Matt Murdock just as he was starting to get into the crimefighting game and suffering a whole bunch of bruises and broken bones as a result. The reasons for the delay on introducing his final costume were sound: to show a man who hadn’t quite found his footing as a hero yet and to raise the stakes a bit as far as the abuse his body was enduring. With season 2 he will finally be decked out in the red costume comic fans have come to know and love, and he won’t be the only one in a recognizable costume, either.
According to ComicBook.com, Daredevil’s co-executive producer Doug Petrie confirmed at a recent TCA press conference that Elektra will sport a version of her signature red costume familiar to comic book fans, although there may be some alterations to it to make it more realistic:
“I think, what we were thinking - first and foremost - were two questions. One was what looks cool? How much do we love the comics and can we do that? And, then also, in terms of bringing Elodie in and her martial arts training - which is so evident in what she does and who she is as a character - what would you really fight in? What would protect you? And, also Elektra isn’t just about protection. She’s a little bit of a stylist, so we threw all that into the mix.”
According to executive producer Marco Ramirez, Elektra won’t be the only one who gets in on the costume action:
Presumably, “everyone” means The Punisher as well. Previous images of Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle obscured the front of his shirt and made it difficult to tell if he would have his signature skull logo. Given the positive buzz around Bernthal’s portrayal of The Punisher, though, and talk of him having his own spinoff series, it doesn’t seem like the showrunners would want to play coy with his identity. As to when exactly Frank Castle will take up the mantle of Marvel’s most notorious vigilante, that is something fans will have to watch the show to find out.
“Anything like a comic book costume, to us, a fun part of the challenge is making it organically feel part of the world or the tapestry of the world that makes it seem like season one. So, will people be wearing kick ass costumes in this show? Yes. Yes, everybody does - we promise! But, that said, we wanted to make it feel as organic and grounded as possible.”

Daredevil season 1 and Jessica Jones season 1 are now available on Netflix. Daredevil season 2 will debut on Netflix on March 18th, 2016, followed by Luke Cage season 1 later in 2016. Release dates for Iron Fist and The Defenders on Netflix have not yet been announced.
