One would imagine that almost any actor would love to appear on Game of Thrones. It is, after all, one of the biggest, most successful television shows in history. But not everyone would specifically want their character to get killed off, especially not in a brutal, unforgiving Game of Thrones-style fashion.
The upcoming seventh season of Game of Thrones could be bringing back certain characters, and the expected plotline of the new season and recent casting news suggests that there’s room for more additions to the cast. One high-profile actor who recently expressed his enthusiasm for joining Game of Thrones is former Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe, who would be excited to come on the show just to meet an early grave.
Radcliffe told Digital Spy in an interview Tuesday that he “would love to” make an appearance on Game of Thrones, if only for a brief time before being added to the show’s vast list of notable deaths - and, presumably, make it a savagely unceremonious death, based on the thirst for blood in his response. “If they want to just bring me in and [expletive] kill me, I would be so happy to do that,” he said.
Radcliffe’s excitement at the thought of being on Game of Thrones should come as no surprise, but the actor also spoke on the idea of joining a series for a major role and possibly sticking to the same role for multiple seasons - similar to what he did portraying Harry Potter in eight movies over the course of ten years. Radcliffe said:
It’s clear that Radcliffe would not want to take on a leading role in a television series - which an actor of his status almost certainly would - unless he feels it’s something that he absolutely cannot turn down, that he would not turn down for any movie role for the next several years. He doesn’t seem terribly serious with his interest in appearing on Game of Thrones outside of a cameo appearance or brief recurring role - one with a vicious death, of course.
“I’ve recently read a couple of really good TV pilot scripts. But then it’s signing on for seven years. Right now, I have a little bit of freedom. So if I read a script for something that’s filming next year, I don’t have to turn it down because I’m not available - which I did, for a long time.”
From Radcliffe’s perspective, it’s understandable that he would not want to lock himself into the same role for another decade. But he also runs the risk of turning down the kind of role that becomes a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and iconic character, something any actor would ultimately regret. Imagine if Radcliffe turned down Jon Snow.
Game of Thrones is expected to premiere its seventh season in the summer of 2017, but no release date has been announced.
