A new Justice League promotion reveals Cyborg’s (Ray Fisher) altered origin story for Warner Bros.’ DC cinematic universe (unofficially known as the DC Extended Universe). Victor Stone, aka Cyborg, was created by comic book writer Marv Wolfman and artist George Pérez, and he made his debut appearance in 1980 as one of the founding members of the Teen Titans. However, ever since the New 52 universe launched, Cyborg was repurposed as one of the founding members of the Justice League - but that’s not the only change to his origin story.
Cyborg has two origin stories, one pre-Flashpoint and one post-Flashpoint. In his pre-Flashpoint origin, Victor was routinely experimented on by his parents, who were scientists at S.T.A.R. Labs. A result of one of their experiments transported a malicious creature into their dimension, and in an attempt to return the creature to its home, Victor was severely wounded and his mother, Elinore, was killed. Victor’s father, Silas, turned him into a cyborg in order to save his life. The same thing happens in the character’s post-Flashpoint origin, though the main difference is that he was initially wounded from an exploding Father Box. Although several of these elements remain in Cyborg’s cinematic origin story, certain things have changed.
Warner Bros. has shifted their Justice League marketing campaign into high gear as the film rapidly approaches, with new information coming to light every day. A recent event in the Philippines revealed that Cyborg’s tragic origin story differs from the established source material. According to the new character information posted on Twitter, Victor was severely injured in a car accident. You can read the tweet below:

Aside from altering the accident that nearly killed Victor, what’s interesting about the new description is that it says Dr. Silas Stone (Joe Morton) saves his son by using the “Apokoliptian Mother Box to reconstruct his body.” Audiences saw this origin for themselves during Cyborg’s cameo appearance (via video) in Zack Snyder’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, in which a Mother Box suddenly awoke, so to speak, and merged with Victor’s dismembered body. However, as comic book fans may know, Apokoliptian Mother Boxes are known as Father Boxes; Mother Boxes are actually from the planet New Genesis. Although it could be mere semantics, referring to the Mother Boxes as Apokoliptian alters their origin as well.
As with many characters in Warner Bros.’ burgeoning shared universe, Cyborg’s origins have changed slightly, but it isn’t too far off from the established source material. The character’s cinematic origin is more closely related to his post-Flashpoint origin than his pre-Flashpoint (read: original) origin. Still, that doesn’t mean the new version won’t work. We’ll just have to wait and see if the Justice League dives deeper into Cyborg’s origin, or if we’ll have to wait until the character’s solo movie hits theaters in 2020.
