The studio behind the hit role-playing game series The Witcher might have an announcement planned for E3. The Polish developer filed a trademark for Cyberpunk 2077 with the European Union Intellectual Property Office on June 4. The trademark is currently under examination, and it could mean that CD Projekt RED has big plans for E3 next week.
Based upon Mike Pondsmith’s popular tabletop game Cyberpunk 2020, the upcoming role-playing game will take place in California during a dystopian future. The story will revolve around a mysterious group called the Edgerunners. It was originally unveiled in 2012, but CD Projekt RED have been largely quiet since then, besides showing some brief images and teaser trailers. The studio most recently released The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt in 2015, and this new release will run on a new version of their proprietary game engine, called REDengine 4.
A recent report suggested that CD Projekt RED was going to announce the release date for Cyberpunk 2077 soon. E3 would be a perfect time to do just that, and Gematsu is reporting that the company is booking hour-long appointments with press outlets at the gaming event for an unspecified title. All signs point to it in fact being Cyberpunk 2077, as the developer is reportedly telling outlets that they’re showing off a “sci-fi RPG.”
While CD Projekt RED is clearly being purposefully vague with their appointment booking, all of the available information seems to point towards Cyberpunk 2077 making a big appearance at the show. Seeing how long the development cycle has been for the ambitious open world game, the timing seems to all add up for a major unveiling. Don’t be surprised if it winds up getting a major spotlight at one of the press conferences that takes place before the event next week.
Such a move wouldn’t be entirely unprecedented. The developer’s previous game, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, appeared at Microsoft’s E3 press conferences in both E3 2013 and E3 2014. Even the fantasy RPG’s card game spin-off, Gwent: The Witcher Card Game, received a reveal at E3 2016 during the Xbox showing. So, don’t be surprised if Microsoft teams up with CD Projekt RED for yet another reveal, in order to to help boost their press conference with an impressive looking multiplatform game.
