Cyberpunk 2077 developers CD Projekt Red may have subtly teased Keanu Reeves’ involvement in the highly anticipated game way back in March through nothing more than a Twitter post. The actor’s involvement was officially confirmed at E3 2019, though a leaker did tease that the presentation would reveal a Keanu Reeves-inspired character before the conference started.
E3 2019 has debuted and confirmed all kinds of exciting new information for upcoming games, including more details about the Final Fantasy VII Remake as well as a sort-of reveal of the next Microsoft gaming console, the Xbox Scarlett. Arguably one of the most exciting parts of the ongoing expo, however, was the reveal of Reeves’ role in Cyberpunk 2077 as Johnny Silverhand, a character inspired by the tabletop game Cyberpunk 2020, which is where CD Projekt Red got a lot of their inspiration for the upcoming game. Still, the studio actually may have ever-so-slightly teased the actor’s involvement earlier this year.
Back in March, The Matrix officially celebrated its 20th anniversary and the world was celebrating such a landmark film in the science fiction (and cyberpunk) community. Getting on board with this, the official Cyberpunk 2077 Twitter page celebrated the film with their very own appreciation post. For a look at the tweet, look below:
What many fans and outlets alike likely assumed was nothing more than Cyberpunk 2077 paying respect to one of the most successful cyberpunk films of all time may have actually been an early hint of Reeves’ involvement in the film. If it was a tease, it was so subtle that no one even really picked up on it, not even really when the E3 2019 leaker hinted at a Reeves-like character. Of course there’s always the possibility that it actually was just the page paying its respects, but voice work and motion capture work takes a long time to complete, so Reeves was definitely involved with the game back in March.
Either way, based on the fan response (including one lucky fan who will get Cyberpunk 2077 free thanks to a wholesome outburst), it’s an exciting time for Reeves to return to the genre that helped cement his legacy as an action star. It’s also a nice continuation of the actor’s incredible comeback, which started with the highly regarded John Wick movies. Whether or not Reeves can pull off yet another classic performance in Cyberpunk 2077 remains to be seen, but given his recent track record, it wouldn’t be a surprise.
