While the Cyberpunk 2077 E3 2018 trailer looked great, it didn’t provide a ton of new details on CD Projekt RED’s upcoming role-playing game. Well, at least that’s what we thought until some eagle-eyed fans spotted that the trailer has a secret message encoded into it. The message addresses everything from whether or not the game will have microtransactions to the game’s lengthy development cycle.
Cyberpunk 2077 was originally announced way back in 2012, while the developer focused on developing The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. After a teaser trailer, the studio went dark on their other announced game. That’s the first topic that CD Projekt RED addresses in the hidden message that can be seen by pausing the trailer at specific points. “We wanted to give you The Witcher 3 and both expansions first which is why this period of staying silent was longer than we planned,” explains the studio. “Sorry for that.” They then decided to stay quiet until they had “something meaningful and substantial” to show, which was what they had today.
The studio also addressed the current release date scenario by saying that there currently isn’t one as they “would only release the game when it’s ready,” and that “quality is the only thing that drives us.” They go onto talk about the game being “seriously big,” and that it’s a single player, story-driven RPG like fans are expecting.
The studio also threw some shots at some industry trends. As far as microtransactions go, the developer answered the query with a question of their own: “In a single player role-playing game? Are you nuts?” wrote the Polish studio. They also confirmed that the game will have free downloadable content, and they’re planning multiple expansions after release like they did with The Witcher 3.
CD Projekt RED knows that they have a passionate fan base built from their pro-consumer business practices, and they’ve built that trust through constant transparency. This hidden message is another example of the developer simply getting how to interact with fans in the digital era. Not only was it fun for fans to decipher, but it gets more attention than if they had simply released the letter on their website.
It’s also reassuring to see that they won’t be embracing any of the nasty business practices that have started to become the norm in gaming. Microtransactions are becoming an unavoidable reality for many releases, but CD Projekt RED is showing it doesn’t have to be that way. Hopefully more developers will follow suit in the future.
