HBO has officially ordered Curb Your Enthusiasm season 10, with filming on the next season of Larry David’s comedy series beginning in 2018. Curb Your Enthusiasm, which ran eight seasons between 2000 and 2011, was never really cancelled, and the line from HBO was always that the comedy series would return at some point if Larry David felt like doing another season. Last year, it was confirmed that he would, and a ninth season of Curb aired on HBO this fall, following a six-year hiatus.
The Curb Your Enthusiasm that returned this fall looked and felt a lot like the show most fans remembered, with most of the cast back, and the exact same theme music and visual style familiar from the show’s long history. The new season was even nominated for SAG awards for both David and the acting ensemble. In this age of revivals of long-gone TV shows, many of them - including Will & Grace and The X-Files - have been well-received enough upon their returns to get renewed for a second new season. And now, Curb has as well.
Curb Your Enthusiasm has now been officially renewed for season 10 by HBO. The new season will begin filming in the spring of 2018, although there’s no word on when it might air on HBO. There’s also no word on plot or guest stars for the new season. “As I’ve said many times, when one has the opportunity to annoy someone, one should do so," David said in a statement issued by HBO.
Curb, the semi-improvised comedy series from Seinfeld co-creator Larry David, features David portraying a fictionalized version of himself, living in Los Angeles and occasionally brushing up against the entertainment industry while frequently committing various comical social faux pas. The most recent season had David trying to produce a stage musical about the fatwa by Iran’s Ayatollah Khomeini against Salman Rushdie (who guest-starred on one episode), and later suffering a fatwa himself.
Is another season of Curb a good idea? Possibly not, as season 9 was far from the peak of the series. It offered no classic episodes and was plagued throughout the year by disjointed plotting and disappointing rehashes of some of the show’s greatest episodes. One episode all but copied the template of the infamous series finale of Seinfeld.
Could Curb rebound with another new season? It’s possible, and considering the renewal, ratings were likely strong. On the other hand, comedy series this long in the tooth rarely pull it off.
