Cult of Chucky director and Child’s Play writer Don Mancini has discussed the future of the Chucky series, and it may well end up taking the doll to the past. Chucky as a character has been terrorizing viewiers since 1988’s Child’s Play, and the possessed Chucky doll has jumped from horrifying adventure to adventure ever since, before something of a dry spell following 2004’s Seed of Chucky.

However, 2013 saw the launch of Curse of Chucky, which was seen as a solid return for the franchise as a straight-to-home video release. Following up on that was 2017’s Cult of Chucky, which had its own gruesome death scenes and its own unrated cut for viewers to enjoy. It seems as though there’s still some life in the old doll yet.

According to the character’s creator, at some point Chucky could even head back to the era of World War II. Speaking with Portal 13 (as reported by Bloody Disgusting), Mancini would certainly be interested in making a World War II Chucky movie. “I would love to do a World War II-era Chucky movie; I think would be awesome,” said Mancini.

Mancini went on to further explain how the situation would work - after all, with the original Child’s Play set in the eighties, there would have to be a bit of an explanation for how the possessed doll ended up in the forties. According to the director, the way in to the era can be explained by Adolf Hitler’s obsession with the occult, as mentioned in Raiders of the Lost Ark. Mancini then explained why he thought a WWII Chucky movie would work so well, stating “It would be legitimately interesting to see Chucky in that milieu with the iconography and the archetypes of the World War II movie; he could be great.”

It would certainly be a different choice to take the character down. Mancini has not always kept strict with his influences for the Chucky movies, explaining that Cult of Chucky was influenced by Inception in part, but it’s fair to say that a WWII film would be something of a leap.

Then again, with the Chucky series anything is possible. As Mancini explains, “one of the reasons we’ve been able to go for this long is because we legitimately care about it,” and with that in mind there’s always a chance the the most bizarre of next steps could find a place. With Brad Dourif still voicing the character, there’s no doubt more Chucky in the pipeline.
