Season 3 of Crashing is just around the corner, and it looks set to take series star Pete Holmes into a very different storyline. Playing a fictionalized version of himself, Holmes has had to endure quite a lot of punishment from his peers in the comedy business over the past few seasons. Even though it’s his own show, Holmes, along with producer Judd Apatow, has approached the series with very little in the way of vanity, putting the onscreen version of himself through the ringer, and repeatedly enduring the well-timed barbs of his would-be contemporaries in the New York stand up scene. The result has been two funny seasons of watching a guy slowly take off after a prolonged failure to launch.
As much fun as it has been to see Pete struggle to learn the ins and outs of the comedy world and make friends with or embarrass himself in front of (usually, it’s the latter) some of the biggest names in comedy, it looks as though Crashing season 3 will give the struggling comedian a break by having him find a modicum of success. But as with anything positive, there must be something negative just around the corner. In Holmes’s case, it’s the fear that he’s sold out.

While the season 3 trailer continues the show’s tradition of having famous comedians appear as themselves, with the likes of John Mulaney, Amy Schumer, Artie Lange, Colin Quinn, and Ray Romano, it also seemingly expands the roles of fellow comedian (and writer for the show) Jamie Lee, as well as Zach Cherry, who plays Pete’s agent, the enigmatic Chicken Wing Man. Moving its main character into a different stage of his life and career seems like a welcome change of pace for the series. While it was plenty entertaining watching Pete eek out a living working odd jobs while finding his voice as a comedian, this new season storyline looks as though it will offer some unexpected obstacles for Pete to face and perhaps come to terms with, like working on a Christian circuit.
How that will play out and how Pete’s new love interest, Kat, figures into this next leg of his story remains to be seen. So far, though, it looks like all the changes are for the better with season 3 of Crashing.
