Freeform’s upcoming Marvel TV series, Cloak & Dagger, has finished filming on its first season. The show stars Aubrey Joseph as Tyrone Johnson and Olivia Holt as Tandy Bowden. Endowed with superpowers (Tyrone can teleport and access the dark dimension, while Tandy can create daggers of pure light and purge addictions), these teens are expected to form a romantic bond as well as taking down some New York drug dealers that experimented on them.
The series, which is expected to debut next year, recently revealed that its episodes will air on Thursdays. Additionally, a brief trailer and some behind the scenes photography has teased Cloak & Dagger’s arrival, hinting at a gritty aesthetic to match the down-to-Earth storyline of troubled youngsters battling local criminals. Other than that, the series’ production went by without much fanfare or news coverage. It was shrouded by a cloak of secrecy, you could say.
Now, thanks to CBR, Marvel fans have found out that the first season of Cloak & Dagger has finished filming. Rectify alum J.D. Evermore, who plays Detective Connors in Cloak & Dagger, broke the news on Instagram. His original posts have since been deleted, but CBR’s report remains intact, confirming that the show’s final season 1 shoot took place on Thursday, November 3.
Responding to some fan comments on his Instagram posts, Evermore revealed that he doesn’t know exactly when the show will air. Evermore’s prediction was that Cloak & Dagger will premiere on Freeform in spring 2018, but he made it clear that this was his own guesswork rather than an official piece of information. A proper announcement about the show’s release date is yet to be made. That secretive cloak is still yet to be lifted.
However, although it is frustrating to have to wait for information, at least Cloak & Dagger still has a network. Freeform’s other Marvel project - the New Warriors sitcom, starring This Is Us’ Milana Vayntrub as Squirrel Girl – was recently dropped by the network due to a scheduling issue. Marvel has requisitioned the property, with the hope of finding a new home for it.
In this age of peak TV, not every Marvel project is lucky enough to get a full series. For example, the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff Marvel’s Most Wanted died a death with an unsuccessful pilot. Cloak & Dagger is one of the lucky ones, having got to the point of wrapping its first full season. It should be fun to see how it turns out.
