Jeremy Renner’s Clint Barton could be the MVP of Avengers: Endgame. After making four appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to this point, Renner may be in position to play a prominent and pivotal role in Avengers: Endgame later this year. This could happen after only being mentioned in Avengers: Infinity War, but his physical absence is said to be for the better.

The whereabouts of Barton was one of the biggest questions leading up to Avengers: Infinity War as he was nowhere to be seen during the film’s marketing. Despite not making an appearance, the first trailer for Avengers: Endgame made it clear that the Decimation was not good to Barton. He’s completely ditched his Hawkeye look and will instead take on the mantle of Ronin, just as he did in the comics. For the purposes of the MCU, it has long been theorized that this is due to his entire family disappearing. Even with this darker turn in store for Barton, there’s a theory that this may all be paving the way for him to be a standout in Avengers: Endgame.

In the latest Screen Rant theory video, we discuss this possibility that Barton will be the MVP (or maybe more appropriately the Most Valuable Avenger) in Avengers: Endgame. The loss of his family, his turn to Ronin, and the overall treatment of the character all play factors in this theory. Check out all the details below:

The importance of Barton in Avengers: Endgame has been a major source of theorizing for fans. Even though he can often be overlooked or even forgotten about, the Avengers’ record when he’s fighting with them is perfect. This isn’t the case when he is absent from the team, which is clearly seen in how they couldn’t defeat Thanos without him. He may just have a bow and arrows to his name, but whether he delivers the final blow or is simply around for moral support, it is fair to believe that his involvement in Avengers: Endgame will help swing the fight back in favor of the heroes.

Of course, one of the most common talking points regarding Barton’s Avengers: Endgame role is whether or not it will be the last mission he takes. Fans have been expecting Barton to meet his end for several films now, and yet, he is still around and could have a future in the franchise. There’s been some rumors of a potential Barton solo movie or series on Disney’s streaming service and that could become a higher priority for Marvel Studios if Avengers: Endgame shows just how important Barton is after all these years. However, since there’s no legitimate evidence of these projects materializing, Barton being the possible MVP of Avengers: Endgame could let Renner and Marvel end the character on a high note.
