Clark Gregg is back working on Marvel Studios movies as he begins filming Captain Marvel. Gregg became a fan-favorite during Phase 1 of the MCU, which made his death in The Avengers that much more devastating. Even though ABC brought him back for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., his revival has yet to be acknowledged by the films. While that’s caused a bit of a divide among fans who want the connectivity to be fluid, Gregg is finally making a return to the big screen.
Phil Coulson will appear in Captain Marvel thanks to the film’s 90s setting. He isn’t the only familiar face that Brie Larson’s solo film is bringing back either. With some Kree warriors and future S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury returning too, there will be a good mixture of new and old with Captain Marvel.
That new and old feeling is exactly what Clark Gregg is feeling now as he’s confirmed he’s begun work on Captain Marvel. This comes weeks after production officially began on the 2019 release. But, Gregg just reporting to set is likely a result of his filming schedule for S.H.I.E.L.D. Based on most of the cast’s social media, filming on season 5 is wrapped or very close to doing so.
S.H.I.E.L.D. is expected to have a very big presence in Captain Marvel. With both Fury and Coulson set to be included, there’s no telling who else could appear too. Hopefully fans will get to see a proper return by Coulson, and back when he’s in his prime. Considering Coulson never made a mention that he’s been to space or encountered Kree before, it’s unlikely he’ll be involved in the Kree-Skrull war section of the movie. Instead, he will likely be involved in the earlier portions of the film.
Coulson’s return is an exciting prospect for fans, and one that many hope is just the beginning. Even though this isn’t the return some have wanted, the fact that Coulson is making an appearance in another movie at all is welcomed. Now if Marvel really wants to make fans happy, a return in the present day where the Avengers learn he’s alive would be huge. Marvel TV’s Jeph Loeb says that plot thread will be resolved in a “surprising way,” so maybe that’s exactly what is coming. But, Marvel Studios and Marvel TV have not played very well together of late, so it’s best to not get hopes up too high. Even if Captain Marvel isn’t the start to Coulson’s future on the big screen, it’ll make for a fun inclusion nonetheless.
