Marvel Studios’ 2016 schedule started off on the right foot with the highly anticipated Captain America: Civil War. The third Captain America movie – called by some “Avengers 2.5” due to its big ensemble – brought together most of the heroes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and divided them in two teams: Team Captain America and Team Iron Man. In addition to that, Civil War welcomed two new heroes to the MCU: Spider-Man (played by Tom Holland) and Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman).

The movie also marked Scott Lang, aka Ant-Man’s second appearance, right after his solo movie. Recruited by Sam Wilson, aka Falcon, Lang joins Team Captain America along with Scarlett Witch, Hawkeye, and the Winter Soldier, and while shrinking to the size of an ant proved to be very useful (like riding an arrow to infiltrate Iron Man’s suit), Ant-Man showed off a new superpower: becoming Giant-Man.

In a new featurette as part of the release of Captain America: Civil War on DVD and Blu-ray, all the attention is on Scott Lang’s new ability to increase his size to that of a giant. The video shows a few glimpses at Giant-Man pre-visual effects as well as War Machine (Don Cheadle) before all the VFX work.

Giant-Man’s transformation happens at one of Civil War’s top moments: the airport battle, where both teams come together to fight. Paul Rudd explains the importance of adding Giant-Man to one of the most important scenes of the movie.

Lang didn’t count on the abilities of young Spider-Man combined with Iron Man and War Machine, but his debut in the battlefield left a good impression on the audience, who are wondering if we will see him become Giant-Man again in future movies.

“In a scene where there’s so much going on you need something new, something bigger and crazier. It kind of put the final stamp on it and go into the rest of the movie and that seemed like a good way to go.”

In the comics, the identity of Giant-Man was used by characters Raz Malhotra, Bill Foster, and Hank Pym, whom we met in Ant-Man. As Giant-Man, Hank Pym defeated villains like Human Top, joined the Secret Avengers, the Avengers A.I., the Avengers Academy, and helped Wasp escape from Microverse. With the introduction of Lang’s new ability, and with Wasp trapped in Microverse as seen in Ant-Man, it would not be a crazy idea if he uses this superpower to rescue her in future standalone movies, such as Ant-Man and the Wasp. It will also be quite interesting to see if and how he will use this ability in Avengers: Infinity War, as Thanos will not be an easy threat to deal with.
