Disney released the first teaser trailer for their upcoming live-action film Christopher Robin, which features a CGI version of Winnie the Pooh – and the internet didn’t disappoint with hilarious reactions.
Walt Disney Studios has had a great deal of success in recent years with adapting some of their animated properties to live-action, such as with Kenneth Branagh’s Cinderella, Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book, and Bill Condon’s Beauty and the Beast. As a result, the studio is bringing even more of their classic properties back to the big screen with a live-action twist. One such film is Disney’s Christopher Robin, which released a teaser trailer today that has been garnering plenty of attention on Twitter. The film follows an older Christopher Robin (Ewan McGregor) who is reunited with Winnie the Pooh and the rest of the gang from the Hundred Acre Wood for a new adventure. It’s something like a mix of Hook and A. A. Milne’s beloved characters.
Of course as with the release of most trailers, movie fans took to Twitter to share their responses to the teaser trailer for Christopher Robin. While the trailer offers a first look at many of the live-action characters set to appear in the film - like McGregor’s Christopher Robin and Hayley Atwell’s Evelyn Robin - it’s the first appearance of CGI Winnie the Pooh that has drawn the most attention, especially with voice actor Jim Cummings returning to the role. So, we’ve assembled some of the most hilarious reactions to the Christopher Robin trailer. First up is Matt Jacobs’ hilarious mashup of Christopher Robin’s Winnie the Pooh and last summer’s massively successful horror film, IT.
Thrillist’s Matt Patches tapped into comparisons between the film’s Winnie the Pooh (who resembles a teddy bear) and the cuddly-looking, foul-mouthed titular character from Seth McFarlane’s Ted. The result is a raunchy take on Christopher Robin that will no doubt be extremely far from the family-friendly Disney film.
Twitter user Nibel, meanwhile, chose to derive humor from the bowel movement with which Pooh shares a phonetic connection, replacing the CGI bear with the poop emoji. The result is the best sequel to The Emoji Movie we could hope for.
In another comparison to a famous Hollywood bear, Karen Han pitts Christopher Robin’s Winnie the Pooh against the titular character in Paddington and Paddington 2. Her image touts the battle as “The greatest fight in history,” as presented by Film Twitter - but who will win?
Anton Volkov draws humor from another of McGregor’s famous movie roles, replacing the Christopher Robin trailer audio with a clip from Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith. The scene in question is when McGregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi confronts General Grievous with a similar, “Hello there!”
Lastly, ScreenCrush’s Matt Singer goes the topical political joke route, referencing the short-lived President Donald Trump campaign advisor Sam Nunberg whose been in the news a great deal this week.
While there have been plenty of silly reactions to the Christopher Robin trailer, there’s also been a number of fans who are excited and/or emotional about Winnie the Pooh’s live-action debut. Certainly, considering the massive success of Disney’s recent films based on classic properties under their umbrella, Christopher Robin has all the makings of a critical and financial hit. And, with a late summer release date, fans only have to wait a few more months before heading into the Hundred Acre Wood with Disney’s Christopher Robin.
