In the era of superhero blockbusters and online campaigns to raise funds for different causes, the big superhero studios have seized this opportunity and brought their own heroes out of the big screen unto the real world to make a change. This gives fans not only the chance to contribute to a good cause but also gives them an opportunity to be closer to their favorite heroes – as well as other types of perks.
Following the steps of fellow superhero Robert Downey Jr., Chris Pratt launched his own Omaze campaign to raise funds for the Lake Stevens Boys and Girls Club while also giving fans a chance to visit the set of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. The cast and crew are currently hard at work in Atlanta but that clearly isn’t an obstacle for Pratt’s good deeds.
Omaze and Pratt released a new video for the campaign in which the Guardians actor surprised a group of kids from the club who came together to build their very own spaceship. Lucky them, Star-Lord intercepted their transmission and made them official Guardians of the Galaxy – not before asking them about their superpowers and surprising them with ice-cream.
The Lake Stevens Boys and Girls Club is a youth center located in Chris Pratt’s hometown of Lake Stevens, WA. The club offers an engaging space for younger children but it’s currently lacking a designated place for teenagers to go after school. The goal of the campaign is to build a space where these teens can hang out, play games, and watch movies, among other activities – all this while surrounded by positive role models always willing to help them when needed.
The club holds a special place in Chris Pratt’s life, as he explains the community center was the place he went to in order to “stay out of trouble." The number of kids attending the club has increased dramatically since he attended, so now he wants to use his influence to “create a space for kids to go have clean, healthy fun."
Aside from helping the club and having a chance to visit the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 set with Pratt, contributors can get other perks depending on their donation. These perks go from limited edition campaign t-shirts to autographed retro cassette players and headphones. The campaign closes on May 10th and the winner will be announced on May 12th. The lucky winner (plus one friend) will be flown to Atlanta and set up in a 4-star hotel, will get a behind-the-scenes tour, lunch with Chris Pratt, and other surprises.
It’s heartwarming to see actors and studios use their power and influence to make a positive change while giving back to the fans. They might not have super-strength or sophisticated alien technology, but these campaigns are another way of showing they are true superheroes.
