Even though the character is set to make her DC Extended Universe debut in this year’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, a lot of hype is building for the upcoming Wonder Woman solo film. Starring Gal Gadot and Chris Pine, the movie is shaping up to be a different sort of superhero tale than Batman v Superman.
One source for information on the movie has been Chris Pine, who is playing Wonder Woman’s love interest (possibly multiple love interests) Steve Trevor, and has commented on the movie in several interviews as of late. His latest discussion of Wonder Woman described the film’s overall theme and may even have hinted at a very special cameo.
While speaking with E! during the promotion of his new film The Finest Hours, Pine was asked about Wonder Woman and what it was like to work on the film. You can see what he has to say below:
It’s interesting to see how he describes Wonder Woman’s character, emphasizing her physical strength and ability while pointing out how important compassion and love is to the character. He says that she has “hope for humanity,” adding that he thinks that we “need a lot of that right now.”
Pine was also asked specifically if Lynda Carter might cameo in the film. With a slight smile, he answers “If I could tell you that, I wouldn’t… but I can’t.” While Pine’s non-answer in no way confirms a Lynda Carter cameo, it certainly doesn’t eliminate it as a possibility. It would certainly be interesting to see Carter alongside the new Wonder Woman, so hopefully Pine’s careful avoidance of saying anything on the subject is a hint that she might appear somewhere in the final film.
With all of the male-driven superhero films we’ve seen in recent years, it’s really interesting to see how Wonder Woman is shaping up. Despite being one of DC’s “Big Three,” Wonder Woman seemed for the longest time to be one of the characters we were least likely to see on the big screen. Even Jonah Hex made it to theaters before Wonder Woman did, and there are likely people who didn’t even realize that he was a comic book character heading in.
Wonder Woman has had its share of struggles getting to the big screen, and there will obviously be some who aren’t thrilled with the film. From the sound of it, though, the movie is focused more on telling a good story and isn’t just a female-led movie simply for the sake of having a female-led movie. The balance of strength and hope that Pine describes should make for a worthy take on the character, and it’s about time that one of DC’s most famous characters was put front and center on the big screen.
