Mission: Impossible - Fallout director Christopher McQuarrie has reiterated that he’d be interested in directing Man of Steel 2 if someone extended the invite - especially if that person was Superman actor Henry Cavill. Cavill plays CIA agent August Walker in Fallout: a ruthless killer who faces off against the Mission: Impossible franchise’s fearless special ops agent Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise). Cavill also sports a mustache in that movie, a detail that - due to complicated filming schedules - led to Superman having a somewhat infamous CGI upper lip in Justice League.
Since Mission: Impossible - Fallout is out in just three months, the press tour has already begun and Cavill is naturally being asked questions about the status of Man of Steel 2 - a sequel that has been in limbo for a long time now. Having worked with Cavill on a massive action franchise movie, McQuarrie has also inevitably been asked if he’d be up for directing Man of Steel 2, and said that he and Cavill discussed their takes on the character of Superman while filming, but no one has extended an actual offer to direct.
In a new interview with CinePOP, McQuarrie was asked whether he’d be interested in directing a superhero movie. “I’ve never really thought about it,” he replied. “I feel like if the story was right and the character was right - I love working with Henry, Henry’s great.” When pressed on the topic of whether or not he’d be interested in directing Man of Steel 2, McQuarrie replied, “If Henry asked me to, sure, why not?” His general position on this question so far is that he’d happily direct the sequel if given the opportunity, and while that might seem non-committal, it presents a great opportunity for Warner Bros. McQuarrie’s last movie, Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation, was a tightly-crafted action thriller that received widespread critical acclaim, and grossed an impressive $682 million worldwide. This is definitely a director who can deliver.
Warner Bros.’ DC Extended Universe is in an uncertain position at the moment, with a dizzying number of projects in development but only three that currently seem to be on a firm track: James Wan’s Aquaman, which will release later this year; David F. Sandberg’s Shazam!, which is currently filming and set for release in April 2019; and Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 2, which is expected to begin filming soon for a November 2019 release. Man of Steel was released in 2013 and has so far had two sort-of-sequels - Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League. But both of those movies saw the Man of Steel sharing a stage with other DC superheroes, and many Superman fans are eager to see their hero flying solo again.
Man of Steel director Zack Snyder’s take on Superman has divided opinion sharply, with some fans loving the moodiness and gravitas of his stories and style, and others wishing for a more upbeat and less brooding version of the character. Cavill has said that he’s very eager to make Man of Steel 2, and that “there is a whole style of Superman’s character that I’m very keen to tell.” Warner Bros. is unlikely to leave one of their biggest characters on the shelf for too long, so hopefully we can expect some more concrete news about Man of Steel 2 soon.
