Chris Hemsworth has revealed that he wanted to do a Ghostbusters sequel, and remains disappointed by the negative online reaction to the 2016 movie. Infamously, news of the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot directed by Paul Feig and starring four female leads was met with immediate backlash by fans who claimed gender swapping the Ghostbusters was somehow ruining their childhoods. The film faced an uphill battle at the box office due in part to the backlash, and ultimately grossed a disappointing $128 million domestically.
Three years after the all-female Ghostbusters touched off one of the most ridiculous controversies in movie history, plans to continue that franchise appear to be dead. Instead of revisiting that movie’s characters, a new version of Ghostbusters from writer-director Jason Reitman will feature newly created teenaged Ghostbusters of different genders. Finn Wolfhard, McKenna Grace and Carrie Coon have already signed on for the new reboot, which is set to hit theaters in 2020.
For his part, Ghostbusters (2016) star Chris Hemsworth says he wishes his movie had gotten its own sequel after all. As he revealed in an interview with Variety, Hemsworth also remains upset about the backlash that dogged Ghostbusters and its all-female cast during the movie’s run at the box office. Hemsworth said:
Such negative reaction to inclusiveness in movies has sadly become the norm, as many fans continue to believe they have ownership over the films they love, and can’t handle it when female characters are given prominent roles. Most recently, many male comic book movie fans went ballistic over Captain Marvel, the first MCU movie fronted by a female lead, crushing star Brie Larson for comments she made ahead of the film’s release and spreading rumors about her being on the outs with her co-stars.
“That whole period I was like, ‘What ownership do you guys have over those characters? Oh, you watched the film, therefore you should have a say over where it goes?’ I thought it was very unfortunate and kind of disappointing.”
For his part, Hemsworth is clearly on-board for more female-fronted movies, including a sequel to Ghostbusters. Many were actually impressed by the comedic ability Hemsworth showed opposite Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones, but sadly for those who did enjoy that film, it appears those characters will never get a chance to redeem themselves at the box office and will instead remain a mere unfortunate footnote in the history of Ghostbusters. Hopefully, all the fans who hated the female Ghostbusters will be more impressed by Reitman’s reboot when it arrives, though it seems almost certain many will find things to complain about with that movie as well.
