Most fans already understood that the Hulk and Thor won’t be picking sides in Captain America: Civil War. In fact, they won’t be in the same zip code as the superhero battle royal takes place. The two strongest Avengers will be off-world on Asgard, trading barbs (sort of) and trying to prevent universal demise in Thor: Ragnarok next year, instead.

Although most fans assumed Hulk and Thor’s exclusion was by design (and it was), they’d probably still like to know: how does Thor really feel about being left out of Civil War?

In a recent viral video uploaded to the Russo Brothers’ Facebook page, the Norse God (via the actor who play shim in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Chris Hemsworth) addressed the question on everyone’s mind: which side of Civil War does Thor fall on? While doing pull-ups on a set of rings, the Aussie actor said simply:

Hemsworth, having more fun with the audience, gets self-deprecating. He wonders if the powers of the Norse God are dwindling, saying “maybe I’m not worthy. Maybe I can’t even pick up the hammer anymore.” Then, using a bit of old-school movie magic, he makes Mjolnir fly into his hands. He ends the video saying, “you’re all pathetic,” before ‘soaring off’ into the horizon. You can watch the entire video below:

“Who cares. Where was the invite for me and Hulk? Just leave the two strongest, biggest Avengers out of this one, did you? Which is fine. Just one for the kids…to have a scrap. The kids just have a scrap and we just sit on the sidelines. When you’re done messing around, then the big boys will just step in.”

Although it’s unfortunate fans won’t be seeing two of Marvel’s mightiest heroes in Civil War, the rationale behind their exclusion makes sense. Thor and Hulk are titans in the MCU. Whichever team they joined would have a clear advantage over the other. Even setting the two on different sides, Civil War could essentially amount to Thor and his team trying to control/contain a raging Hulk. And if they wound up on the same side, forget it. However, despite his exclusion from Civil War, Hemsworth’s line about “stepping in” could allude to his impending collision with Ragnarok or even tease his and the Hulk’s return in Avengers: Infinity War Part 1.

As fun as including a Hulk-Thor throw down would be, the Russo Bros have made it clear that Civil War isn’t an Avengers sequel; it’s a Captain America film. They’re more interested in the interplay between the opposing viewpoints, rather than simply creating more superhero carnage, a la Avengers: Age of Ultron. Still, Hulk and Thor would have added an interesting dynamic to the film. It will be fun to see how the MCU reconnects after its next few installments.
