Disney+ is bringing back the classic chipmunk duo Chip ’n’ Dale, for a rebooted cartoon. Launching in November, the streaming service appears committed to their animation core with Chip ’n’ Dale being added to a slate that includes, Monsters at Work and Bluey.

Created by Walt Disney animator Bill Justice, Chip ’n’ Dale are anthropomorphic chipmunk brothers who made their first appearance in 1943’s Private Pluto. Incorporated into cartoons with iconic Disney characters, Chip ’n’ Dale tote a mischievous streak and are antagonistic against Donald Duck, Pluto, and Mickey Mouse. Animated with deceivingly adorable features, the chipmunk brothers appear almost identical - with the exception of Chip’s small black nose and Dale’s prominent red nose. In their adventures, a stark contrast in personalities is also displayed, as Chip is logical and Dale dives into situations with reckless abandonment. The duo nabbed four consecutive Academy Award nominations in the Best Animated Short category and became the title characters in the 1989 series, Chip ’n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers. Disney has furthered production on a live-action Rescue Rangers film, and tapped The Lonely Island’s Akiva Shaffer to direct.

Apparently, Disney is eager to return the duo to their antics with full force, as plans for a series are in the works. According to Deadline, the show is being produced by Disney’s animation team based in London and Xilam Animation - the production company responsible for Paprika and Mr. Magoo. Disney+ will release 39 7-minute episodes featuring the chipmunk troublemakers in their original non-verbal form. Following the titular small duo in their adventures in a big city, the project is in the creative hands of producer Marc du Pontavice and director Jean Cayrol.

In addition to the announcement of the Chip ’n’ Dale reboot, Disney+ also unveiled details about the upcoming Monsters At Work. Set to premiere on Disney+ in 2020, Monsters At Work picks up six months after the events that occurred in the smash hit Monsters, Inc. Starring Ben Feldman (Tylor Tuskmon), Billy Crystal (Mike), and John Goodman (Sully), Monsters at Work follows Tylor Tuskmon, a youthful mechanic at Monsters, Inc. Tuskmon’s mission in life is to work with his idols, Mike and Sully, on the Laugh floor. The series is helmed by Disney veteran Bobs Gannaway and produced by Ferrell Barron. Offered at a competitively low price of seven dollars a month, Disney+ proves to be padding its catalog with new takes on familiar faces, as well as housing Marvel and Star Wars.

In an era of reboots and revivals, one focused on an animated series is always hit or miss. The past few years have displayed that no children’s show or topic is off the radar for a rebirth, including, Sonic the Hedgehog, Tom & Jerry, and the View-Master toy. However, with Chip ’n’ Dale returning to its roots in a classic form, the cartoon will serve as a reminder that animation is the staple of Disney. Given the dynamic duo’s longevity and familiarity, the Chip ’n’ Dale series certainly stands a chance to be a hit for Disney+.
