Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina promotes the actors who play Nick Scratch and Theo Putnam, Gavin Leatherwood Lachlan Watson respectively, to series regulars. The Netflix original has been renewed for parts 3 and 4, and the characters will likely have a lot more screen time in the seasons to come. The complete first part of this Sabrina The Teenage Witch reimagining was released in October 2018, and part 2 premiered in April.
Unlike its sitcom/laugh-track inspiration, the Netflix show is dark, even verging on horror at times, but despite this, the all-star former cast has happily handed over the torch. The witches, including Aunt Hilda (Lucy Davis) and Aunt Zelda (Miranda Otto), worship Satan in Greendale, and writing one’s name in his book comes with a price. Another notable difference is that Salem, the cat, does not speak in the newer show. Parts 1 and 2 largely dealt with Sabrina (Kiernan Shipka) becoming familiar with her powers, and Satan’s plan to convert Sabrina to the Church of Night in order to fulfill an ancient apocalyptic prophecy. Unlike in the comics, Harvey (Ross Lynch) and Sabrina briefly date but eventually break up and go on to date other people. Harvey moves on to Sabrina’s prophetic best friend, Rosalind (Jaz Sinclair), and Sabrina begins to date Nick, a full warlock who sacrifices himself at the end of part two to save the world. Also in the gang is Theo, a transgender classmate who comes out and embraces himself in part 2.
TVLine reports that Lachlan Watson and Gavin Leatherwood have both been promoted to series regulars for the next two parts of the series. Both characters had prominent roles in part 2 in particular, so the promotion is well deserved. Nick goes from an obedient servant of the Dark Lord to a hero when he volunteers as Satan’s human prison, and agrees to spend eternity in Hell. Of course, Sabrina won’t let that happen. At the end of part 2, Sabrina says to Harvey, Rosalind and Theo, “Let’s go to Hell and get my boyfriend back.” So it seems that part 3 will revolve around saving Nick, and somehow finding an alternate prison for the Dark Lord. Theo also played an integral role in the second to last episode, “Chapter Nineteen: The Mandrake,” when he single-handedly kills the mandrake versions of himself, Harvey and Rosalind, simultaneously freeing them from their cocoons.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina part 3 does not have a premiere date yet, but the cast is already filming in Vancouver. Theo agreed to embark on this quest with Sabrina, along with his other pals, so fans will likely see him grow even more brave in the next part. As for Nick, it will be interesting to see if he acts any differently with the Dark Lord within him, and if Sabrina and her friends will be able to save him, without risking the fate of the world.
Many shocking and unexpected things happened in the past season, such as Sabrina learning that Satan is, allegedly, her biological father. This complicates things for Sabrina, who has grown up her entire life believing the late Edward Spellman was her father. Likely, the next season will see Sabrina growing as well, as she learns to deal with her lineage, and the constant threat the Church of Night poses to her and her family. What we can confirm, however, is that Nick and Theo will have a lot more to do in parts 3 and 4, which are beginning to sound as thrilling as their previous two.
